Maybe he had been wrong in being so sure about her feelings for him...
No. There was no way. Everyone in the world, except Elise, knew about Chrilise them. Someone would have told him if she didn't feel the same way, right? Even Kat...and Bliss...and Ryan, and Minnie, and, well, basically everyone he ever spoke to, made hints about them. But he had no idea how in the world Elise could think he was in love with KAT. Not that there was anything wrong with Kat because she was a very pretty and lovely girl.
As soon as she started moving away from him, he began to panic. Christopher actually wished Ryan was there to help explain everything to her or at least to keep her from moving. He stood up quick, his eyes wide, and stuttered several times, trying to figure out what in the world he was supposed to say now. Calming himself down, he took a big breath and walked towards her. "Elise, I promise, it's not Kat...but if you have to leave....I guess..." And slowly he could feel himself getting angrier by the second.
He had never intended to be upset with Elise but he was so frustrated with everything that was happening. "Wait. No. Just stop pretending like you don't already know!" His breathing was loud and he stared at her, waiting for her to give in and admit that she knew everything. Once she did that, maybe they'd actually get somewhere. Once she admitted it, they could move on from where ever they were at this point in their friendship.
Elise blinked quizzically at him, cocking her head to the left as if he was an Arithmancy equation to be solved. Judging by his expression, it probably was either that he didn't expect her to know it was Kat or it just really wasn't the blonde Slytherin. His exclamation proved her right. It wasn't Kat. Was it supposed to be Beezus, then? He wouldn't be the first Slytherin to think so...
"It'd explain the staring," she said quietly, still not lifting her gaze from the wall next to him. She couldn't meet his eyes, not right then. Instead, she busied herself with trying to figure out who else it would have been, had it not been Kat. The most obvious answer was probably Bee, but then there was always Bliss -though she was a little bit young?- or... there were a lot of girls in Hogwarts. It was really quite pointless trying to figure out which one he meant.
The moment he got up as suddenly as he did, Elise jumped a little. She was startled, especially since she hadn't expected so quick a reaction to her making for the door. She was actually enjoying the distance. It hurt her heart less, being just far enough to be out of his reach. Watching him carefully, she made sure that he didn't catch her eyes and see the pain they were holding. It was the step towards her that started to worry her as she took a step further from him, not quite resuming the same distance even with her back almost to the wall of the tree house.
Taking his next sentence as permission to go, Elise almost turned around when he raised his voice. Flinching slightly, she had to blink a few times to clear her vision. He thought she was lying to him, and he probably had grounds to, seeing as she'd just said that she had tryouts to hold. That wasn't even a total lie, though. She did have tryouts to hold, just not within that hour.
“Y-you really think I'd lie to you?” she asked, eyes watering as her tone rose to match his.
“You think that I would lie to you?”
