Why is she staring? Did he have something in his beard? He surreptitiously ran his fingers through the hair but felt nothing. She must just be having a moment, likely trying to figure out how to best answer the question.

Expecting? "Ah, I see. Maybe yeh heard some rumors a' the end o' term? Jus' ter be clear, I was NOT responsible for my cattle endin' up in Annie's study, an' she's well aware of that." He felt the need to set the record straight with every person he could.

And then she was berating him like he was a student--a CHILD. "I'm jus' tryin' ter be friendly. She's the only new staff member I know, and i's always nice ter feel welcomed." He remembered his first Feast last year, stuck between Annie and Cece. A friendly welcome from someone he knew would have been most appreciated.
