Peyton decided not to pay the boy anymore attention for now. His mother was handling him, and she didn't want to interfere. She had enough sense to know that wouldn't go over very well at a job interview. Apparently, if the slam was any indication, he'd left the room anyway. Good. Back to the interview. Peyton didn't mind children, but when she was trying to get hired for an open position, she could skip on the whole interruption part.
Peyton instinctively raised her own eyebrows when the woman sitting across from her did the same. Then BAM, difficult question came hurling at her when she least expected it. Nope. She hadn't banked on being asked anything that brought up a degree of emotions in her. She only briefly hesitated before answering, though.
Had she ever tried to harvest something and had it go terribly wrong? "Yes," she honestly answered, "and it's also the most difficult harvesting I've ever done." Her eyes flickered away for a second as she recalled the moment like it was yesterday. Then, looking back at Truebridge, she began. "Her name was Sadie, and she was born to one of the mooncalves I'd raised at the Center. I was so excited about her that I'd named her before she was even born." Peyton had had a name for a male mooncalf, too, but that hadn't been needed. "She was stillborn, though, and as a person who truly loves and cares for creatures, I had to make the split second difficult decision of whether or not to harvest her organs," she said. "I'd never been involved in that kind of harvesting, but because of my training, I knew how to do it. Something good could come of Sadie's organs, though, so I took her to a nearby harvesting area and started the process. Her mother had followed us though, and got terribly upset--and reasonably so. She couldn't understand what was happening, and she kicked at my arm in some effort to try."
Peyton sighed. "I sliced Sadie's lung in the process, and it couldn't be used," she continued. "That was hard, and I learned several important lessons that day, and it was also very early on in my career."
So, no. Peyton Barlow wasn't perfect. She didn't think Truebridge would have bought a 'No, everything's gone on splendidly in my career' answer either, though.
