His shoes clicked and clacked against the stonework below, and to Patrick, the sound was mesmerizing. He listened as it bounced off the wall and echoed down the path, only to be drowned out by the next step he took. He listened to the gentle, barely audible scraping sound of his palm against the rough stone pillar, and in his mind, he examined the sound.

For Patrick, it wasn't an uncommon thing to fall into these 'trances'. He often got lost in his own mind, becoming very aware of the world around him, and taking note of even the most trivial things. Things that we all take for granted. Things that we don't really think about. He didn't think for a minute that anyone else ever payed any attention to the sound they heard when they ran their hand over a stone pillar. But when he lost himself like this, it was impossible for him not to.

Every time he passed a gap in the columns where one was expected to walk through into the courtyard proper, the silence was deafening. Every now and then, he would stop by these gaps and look into the courtyard, letting his mind wander. This particular time, instead of returning to his pacing, he took a few steps through the archway. Peering down at his feet, he traced the cracks in the mossy cobblestone path where it was assimilated by the grassy courtyard and vanished. With a deep breath, he looked up and around, noting the location of the nearest bench. It was occupied by someone, but that didn't necessarily mean he couldn't sit there.

"Is it alright if I sit here?" He asked, finally breaking free of his 'trance', finding himself in the real world once more. Interaction with other people had a way of clearing his head. The girl he spoke to appeared to be preoccupied with her drawing, and Patrick wasn't sure if she'd find his presence to be a distraction. She appeared so dedicated, and he certainly didn't want to spoil her concentration.

Giving a quick look around the courtyard, the sixth year finally thought of something. Drawing her attention back to the sketchbook, the girl started covering the first lines she had scribbled. Change of plan. She finally came up with a good idea for the sketch.

Scribble. Scribble. Scribble.

Hmmm. Gwendolyn continued to draw a few random lines on the nearly blank page of the sketchbook. After a while, the sixth year stopped to examine her drawing. For someone who didn’t know what she was drawing, the sketch probably looked like a lot of lines. Ehh. Though, the Ravenclaw had a plan in mind, and thought the drawing was coming out alright.

As she picked up the quill again, in order to continue the sketch, Gwen heard someone say something. When did that person get here?, the sixth year asked herself as she raised her eyes from the notebook and tracked down the source of the voice. Now the problem was- she hadn’t paid attention to what he was saying.

Errr…

‘Umm…yeah’, she eventually said, hoping that what he asked was if he could sit or something. Ugh. Gwen really had to start paying attention to what people were saying. Multitasking was generally something she could do, but not while she was drawing. Whenever she started a sketch, she was way too focused on the drawing. Hmm.
