Oh, Merlin! Lottie was wasting all her time at school. Clearly, reading runes didn't count, did it? So, what was she supposed to say? There was no raising of hands on her behalf, since she could only speak English. Though, she was interested in this Mermish business, otherwise she wouldn't be here, correct? Correct!
