There was a pause, and then two sniffles followed the moan as the source of all the noise became apparent. Moaning Myrtle had decided to sit in on today's lesson, as it were, and not because she still had a crush on the other divination professor in the room.
It was because sheeee wanted a Tarot Card reading toooooooooooo. Merlin.
Callie hadn't noticed the ghost float into the classroom during all the mini-chaos that was Airey Flamsteed but she was there now and sitting in one of the desk as if she was a student. Was she here to learn, cause trouble, or seriously confused that she was a ghost and no longer a pupil here? "Good afternoon Myrtle, I'm glad you've taken time out of your day to come learn with us." Was she ever really that busy though? "Unfortunately, you've guess just a tad high. There are only 78 cards in this deck but don't worry we will learn a lot more today." Quote:

So despite the distracting moans of Moaning Myrtle, Alyssa raised her hand and answered. "Professor I believe that the Rider -Waite Tarot deck is made up of 78 cards." "That is correct Miss Potter." Another right answer from the Hufflepuff girl. She was always rather attentive in class. Quote:

That might have been the amount of tarot cards sold in the last millenium - but she highly doubted that. "There are twenty two major arcana cards and I believe fifty six minor arcana cards...rounding it out to being about seventy eight cards all-in-all." What Ravenclaws did math for this and well, research, and she was kind of a Divination fan. "You are right in the total number of cards but not exactly on the separation of them. But don't worry, I will go further into that in just a second." Calista smiled brightly to the Ravenclaw to show her her answer was still quite good. Quote:

The brunette had fixed her mind on the them having something going on. Yet right now, it seems the evermore well-suited man was unto their Divination teacher. He was stringing both women?

See, see, see! He even mentioned the DADA Professor's name IN FRONT of the other. That was such a ludicrous display of disloyalty!
As it is though, the blonde woman didn't seem to mind at all. She was such a professional, still pushing through with the class and such.
ANYHOW. They were working with Tarot cards today. Beezus have seen those before. It was particularly famous in the muggle world as what the Professor had said. And as far as her memory went...there were ---
----- Gulping gargoyles! O.o What was it this time?
SIGH. People and people interrupting her thoughts, and wait....a ghost decided to join the party. "Hello Myrtle. " Can you PLEASE not whine like that? "I think you've mistaken the Rider-Waite tarot deck for something else. There's only 78 cards for it." Smith's 78, it was. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight, Professor?
Although tempted to ask her where that 52 542 came from, Beezus chose to hold her tongue. Moaning Myrtle was complexly sensitive. Calista was glad to see that even the Hogwarts ghosts were taking interest in her lessons but did it have to be one that was so whiny? She was happy that at least one of the students were trying to help her and address the girl politely. "Thank you Miss Castell, and you are correct, there are only 78 cards in the type of deck we will be learning to use." The ghost had guessed just a hair too high. Quote:

And such a pity they wouldn't be learning about him. The man was quite interesting in his own right...but she wouldn't question it any further. This lesson was NOT about Professor Airey. Nod.
Ooo and lookit! The Professor!
Ahem. But back to the lesson.
She zoned back in in time to hear the question and realize that she had no clue what the answer was. Yup. Seemed about right. Nothing new there and seeing as she didn't know the answer she figured she'd just sit back for a bit and take down what the Professor was saying. Cards and ancient years and divination. That was just about everything.
From the question though she was willing to bet that the cards weren't meant for playing with and this allowed her to keep her opinions to herself...didn't want Professor Elwood to start thinking that she was doing it on purpose, otherwise there's be a time when she was doing it on purpose and it'd be harder to get away with.
Couldn't have that now. Nope. She'd stay quiet.
Except...
Except Myrtle. "Yeah...when you were I suppose but most of them are graduated," like her Mama Vivi and Louisa, "and well, you're dead so you can't be of much help...but...don't you think you'd have died anyway by now? It really shouldn't matter..." It was a rather curious thought actually and Lex tilted her head, giving her full attention to the ghost. "I'm just wondering."
How very curious indeed. Alright she wasn't going to argue with them about how they addressed Airey in his own lessons but if there was ever an instance they were hosting a lesson together, they would just have to get used to the fact of calling him Flamsteed.
She was listening to someone else's answer to her question when she saw Alexa whispering something to the ghost. "Miss Cambridge please pay attention up here." Elwood would like to think that she too was trying to help and correct Myrtle's guess. Quote:

The third-year turned her gaze back to the Professor and nodded absently at each sentence. She had heard of those Tarots. And she was glad when Elwood pointed out the beginners fact. Because hearing the number 8000 made Cassia feel uneasy. However, the feeling evaporated knowing that they weren' going to study all eight thousand.
And to answer the question. "I think they are about seventy eight?" She said not sure. Since she had read ahead in the book but that was back when she was excited when she first bought the books.
Holy Cat.
This ghost had like the most unpleasant voice.
Cassia winced as the spirit spoke up in that whiny moaning voice. Annoying. Besides, ghosts weren't such a pleasant memory to Cassia. Considering last term. Mhhmm. She didn't forget. Pivoting in her seat, the slytherin made sure to turn away from the ghost. This particular one was rather annoying because it was sad and whiny.
Hearing what Lex said to Myrtle, Cassia giggled at the lioness. "Doubt she'll give you the correct answer, can't you see that she apparently has a problem with number." She whispered over to Lex. "Must be a side effect of being a ghost." there was no other explication. Why else do you explain the answer that the ghost just given. And it made sense, because surely being a ghost for ,Merlin knew, how many years would cause all the information to somehow get confused and mushed together or something.
But let's hope the Moaning ghost's hearing sense wasn't that good. "There are 78 cards, good job!" Callie was happy to see that the young Slytherin also got the question correct. It was only a second later that she too was turned around focusing on Alexa and Myrtle. "Please focus up here dear." Quote:

As for the Rider-Waite tarot deck, the blonde wasn't sure about how many cards were included. Her classmates seemed to know though so Ella simply nodded and scribbled down the number in her notes.
O__O
Moaning Myrtle?
Loud ghost was loud.
Ella cringed a little but otherwise stayed focused on the professor. Ghosts liked to learn too apparently and she saw no harm in that. She wasn't so sure Elwood would feel the same, though. "Professor?" Ella asked, hand in the air. "Do the number of cards in a tarot deck have significance? I mean the standard playing card deck has 52 so is there a significance to the number 78?" Good question! "Interesting Miss Bishop, there actually is a significance to the number but I will talk about that in just a second." Quote:

Oh well back to class then, she thought as the next question came but then the first answer was.. MYRTLE. Oh lord couldn't someone keep her locked in that bathroom. Didn't she do enough damage last term to stay hidden from guilt. Glaring at the ghost Minerva tried to just ignore her and put up her hand. "Professor is there 76 card in the deck." She knew she saw somewhere that it was seventy something, but couldn't remember the last number so she just decided to guess. 76? "Close, Miss Wheatborn but there are actually 78 cards in this Tarot deck." She wondered mildly why the girl guessed a number that happened to be so close to the real answer. Quote:

So Nate raised his hand in an arrogant way then stated "The answer is quite obvious. Even any-...well maybe not anyone." He stared up and down the ghost. "Can get the answer. The answer is 78 cards total in the deck." Then he directed his gaze from the ghost to the professor. Another correct answer but one that had a bit of sass with it. "Good answer but please remember your manners, we are all here to learn, are we not?" Quote:

It was best to be honest, in Dylan's opinion...He knew about other forms of Divination in depth, but not those blasted cards. There were just too many of them.
It was his mother who got down with Runes and the tarot cards stuff...Although, Dylan was learning to love Ancient Runes. Professor Botros was one cool dude. "I know some of the card names..."...but that was about it. SQUINT.
Ahem. What was SHE doing in here? Couldn't they have any peaceful lessons, anymore? "Myrtle, love. You're confusing us." The Slytherin idly wondered if he could flirt her away...Had that ever been done? Could he be the first to achieve it? "Although, your knowledge is infinite..." "You what?" Callie asked the Slytherin Captain. She was expecting a number. "Oh, you can name them? Well good, keep that handy because I will be asking in a few minutes."
She was ready to move on to another student when she saw Dylan flirting with Myrtle. Merlin's Beard that boy was always doing something, and with that Odessa girl not in attendance today apparently ghosts were his second choice. Quote:
Originally Posted by fanficfanatict Selina tried to suppress her moan when she figured out that they would be working with tarot cards. It was not that she didn't enjoy everything that Elwood taught them, honest, it was just that tarot cards were kind of parlor tricks. And as much as she didn't particularly like her affinity for Divination tarot cards felt like a muggle movie.
Although, what made her feel even sillier was that she knew the answer. When she was younger Kurumi and her used to play a game with tarot cards. It was like a testing game of sorts. They had spent a ton of time just goofing off with them. So yeah, she knew how many cards were in the deck not that she needed them.
Raising her hand she said, "Typically 78. Honestly, it depends. You can't say definitively how many are in the deck. It depends on if you have an honest reader or not." How many sideshows just loaded their decks with the more interesting tarot cards? That way they could give customers a good show. But yes, TYPICALLY seventy-eight.
And then she heard the familiar moans and groans of Moaning Myrtle. Okay SERIOUSLY, they had to figure out a way to keep that ghost out of the confines of the classroom. ESPECIALLY Divination. Selina enjoyed this class and she did not want her wailing throughout her favorite lesson, thank you very much. O___O
Selina seemed a tad upset, probably something that happened before class or general stress about her 7th year. She would ask her after class to be sure. Either way she was hinting at the underbelly of the Noble Art. "Yes, Miss Skylar you are correct. There are some practitioners that like to sway the truth of peoples' fates by adding and subtracting cards as needed but typically we use 78." She gave her a small smile of reassurance.
Elwood wouldn't be swindling any of them today. Quote:

"Professor, don't you wish that ghosts could leave footprints for us to read like in our last class? I bet you could tell stuff about how they lived and died.... it's a shame, really." The Branxton boy, the one who gave her flowers last lesson still seemed to be reliving that day at the Lake. "I think that would be rather interesting Mr. Branxton, I will have to research that because you could probably use types of Divination that have to do with auras to achieve the same thing." She paused and wracked her brain. "Or there is always the practice of seances that allow you to communicate with the other side when they are not as...available as some." She coughed and gestured awkwardly at Myrtle. It was no matter he hadn't answered her question, he posed an interesting one himself. Quote:

Shame, wasn't it? Especially since he had a date with Elwood after. It would make plenty of sense if they DID learn about him.
And everyone was saying 78 was the answer.. but apparently the ghost, the one that had appeared out of nowhere, thought otherwise. Alice decided to go with that answer,
'cause it didn't sound as boring as the other. "Fifty-two thousand, five hundred and forty-two is a lot of cards. It would be a shame if someone dropped them, you know. On account of they'd have to spend ages picking all of those up." If she dropped them, would she have to gather them all up again? On account of she didn't really want to. And it looked as though at least one of her students had sided with Myrtle rather than hassle her. "Miss Fischer, there are actually only 78 cards in this deck but....good guess."
Smile. Quote:

Like this one, muttering to herself over there. "It's nottttttt," Myrtle huffed at the girl. "When was your last tarot card reading?" Since she thought she was such an EXPERT. "Where do you people keep getting SEVENTY-EIGHT from?" Myrtle declared in exasperation, throwing her pearly hands up in the air. "Ravenclaw house used to be able to adddddd, when I waaaaaaaaaaaaas a Ravenclaaaaaw......."
Oh watch out, children. Best plug your ears now before Myrtle started to get worked up into telling the story of how she died. Why the moaning? "Myrtle, please, we must be polite when other students answer. And I would ask you to please be a bit more quiet during the lesson?" How was Callie supposed to teach when there was a ghost-girl whining and crying in the back. There was nothing she could do besides ask to get it to stop.
There had been many guesses but the students were mostly answering correctly. Apart from the Myrtle outbursts things were going good so far. "Right so like many of you said the Rider-Waite Tarot deck has seventy-eight cards. They are split into three categories: the 22 Major Arcana, the 40 Minor Arcana, and the 12 Court Cards."
She paused for a minute for them to write this all down and to give Myrtle, Alexa, and Dylan a quick look before moving on. "Sometimes the Major Arcana cards are called 'Face cards' because they are the ones with the drawings rather than the numbers. Now I would like you to all remove your decks of Tarot cards from the boxes on your desks and pull out all of the Major Arcana cards. Once you've done this, open your textbooks to the chapter on Tarot Cards and then raise you hand to present what you find on one of them." Simple enough, right? "So basically what I need you to do is pick one with a picture on it, like this one," the Divination professor said as she held the Fool card up for them all to see. "and then look it up in your book and present your findings to the class. Go ahead and get to work." |
