I'm dreaming with my eyes wide open

It was time to practice and Patrick always loved practice. It gave him a chance to impress the professors. Even if he rarely succeeded, he always did his best and this time was no exception. He stood, repeating the incantation quietly to himself, breaking it down into the syllables to help him remember. Pacing back and forth just a little on the mat, he practiced the wand movement as he repeated the incantation, assigning points of the motion to particular syllables of the incantation so he could sync them together and cast the spell quickly.

"Imperiano!" He exclaimed with the tight circular motion and the flick of the wrist, knowing that it helped to speak loudly when you first start out practicing a spell. A barely visible, bluish shock-wave rippled from the tip of his wand, and wrapped itself in a dome around him much like the bubble should have, only something wasn't quite right. Confused, Patrick scratched his head, wondering if the spell had even done anything at all. 'Maybe the bubble is there, it just isn't visible.' he thought to himself, and decided to test this hypothesis.

He remembered the professor had described the spell as a 'One-way barrier' for physical objects, and so he figured the best way to test it was to get a physical object to contact the bubble from the outside, if it was even there. From his pocket, Patrick produced a single Galleon. He flipped it into the air, keeping his eye on it. Maybe the bubble would deflect it on it's way back down. The coin passed through the space where the bubble should have been on it's way up without trouble, but as it came back down and passed through the bubble's supposed location, slow ripples appeared in the air, as if the coin had hit water, and the bluish bubble around Patrick became visible only for a short moment. The coin suddenly slowed down. It didn't stop, it didn't bounce off the bubble, it kept falling, but was now falling in slow motion. It turned and spun in the air slowly and gently, like what one would expect of a flipped coin on it's way down,

"I think I did it wrong." He said, confused, staring at the galleon as it slowly and gracefully sank past his face towards the floor.
