Elinor subconsciously mimicked her mother's pursed smile in disbelief that she hadn't thought of inviting her sisters. But she didn't ponder on the issue. Whatever. When her father revealed the lemon wedges, Elinor picked up a cup and saucer, as well as one of the slices, and sat back up, handing them over to Nigel. She needed something to do with her hands, okay?
When she started to reach for her own tea, her mother posed a question she was shocked she had jumped to. How long had they been together? Elinor started to answer. Well. Nigel had been shop owner for... five years? No. She looked, incredulous, at the man beside her. "Seven years...?" Had it really been that long? "no...", she breathed, mostly to herself.
"S-seven years," she finally answered, straightening with her own cup of tea. The tea she was too nervous to drink. As she clasped the saucer in one hand, the other one was sitting at her side, fidgeting unconsciously.
Had it been seven years?
