Eliza listened and nodded as Professor Cerulean gave her speech about voting and elections. She always had a good introduction prepared, Eliza had noticed. I'll bet she gets a really good review from these board people, she thought as she stole a glance at the two adults seated in the room. She remembered hearing about that election with the messed up ballots and all of the trouble it caused. It was still hard for her to believe that something could get so out of hand, but it seemed to happen in all sorts of things.
She raised her hand to mention something she had heard or read at some point, she wasn't sure which. "Professor, there was George Washington, the first president of the United States of America. I heard that he was sort of appointed or encouraged to be president by his peers. He didn't want to be president really at all!" She wondered if anyone else had heard about that too. She thought it was really interesting that he would take on that responsibility because of a sense of duty, even though he didn't want to. She wished more people would do good things even when they would rather not. And wouldn't it be nice if there was some sort of morality or decency test that could keep all of the bad sneaky people out of leadership positions? She wondered if anything like that would ever be developed. |
