Rolling his eyes, Jake looked at Ascanius. "Grow up." See, it was okay for him to say that because he never openly stated that he was just trying to get on the other boy's nerves.
For a second, Jake thought he had won. He knew he had a point - Ascanius should have known that Penelope was injured. Jake knew. Most of Hogwarts probably knew. There were a lot of people in the stands watching the game. Ascanius should've worried when he didn't hear from her afterward... he was not the idiot here. He did, however, glare at the naming-calling.
He was prepared to retort, too, until Stark stepped up to him. To Jake's credit, though, he held his ground. He met the other boy's gaze, looking up slightly to meet his eyes. "She got knocked out. Took a broom handle to the chin right at the start." He didn't say which broom it was. He wasn't proud of the fact, of course. He'd been practically traumatized when it happened. And he still felt horrid about it. He didn't need Ascanius to tel him what an awful friend he was for hurting her. Jake had a feeling that he wouldn't take the 'it was an accident, things happen in Quidditch' excuse.
Grow up? That was rich. Keller was older then Ascanius and was acting in the same manner as Ascanius and Keller was telling HIM to grow up? If anyone had any growing up to do, it was Keller. At least Ascanius was mature enough to admit that he was going for the kill. Keller was still trying to dance around the subject like a little girl at his tea party. Well, Ascanius was never one for tea parties- he was a fencer. He did things with purpose and line and reason. There was no need to hide his reasons- ever. If Keller needed to hide behind the shroud of his proper behavior, he could.
So he scoffed at his grow up dig and simply said, "Sure, its me. At least I can admit that I know I'm being a jerk about it. You can't, which says a lot about your character or lack thereof." Thereof was seriously the most amazing word in the dictionary besides rue. Rue was a good word too.
But all of the petty nonsense was pushed aside when he heard that Penelope had been hurt. Nothing else mattered. He and Keller could do all of this stupid stuff later and Ascanius would be more than glad to continue whatever was going on. But now, after a day of no contact with her, he finally knew why. This was why he had not spoken to her- she had been injured and badly too. So when Jake looked up a little at Ascanius to show his manly demeanor or some stupid thing, Ascanius just rolled his eyes and said as seriously as he could, "How did it happen? Who was the idiot who decided THAT was a smart play?" This was why Ascanius hated Quidditch besides the height thing, it was unnecessary violence up in the air.
