Anyway, on with the lesson, and Em jumped a little when she the voice coming from..... well, just where was it coming from, anyway? And who was it?
Okay something similar to Occlumancy. Which was reading people's memories. Hmm... So something to do with memories? "Um, using someone's memories to come up with a reading?" That would be similar to reading someone's memories, right?
Despite mentioning the close spelling and pronounciation of Oculomancy compared to the distinctfully different art of Occlumency, a few students, albeit younger students, still mentioned to mix them up. No worries though. She just needed to set them straight. "Actually, like I said before this is a different practice. This is a form of Divination where the eyes are used but not to read thoughts but rather to interpret reflections or other characteristics." Close but not the same. SPOILER!!: Correct answers: Scrying and all that... Quote:

Kurumi's hand went up anyway - despite thinking she would just sit through this lesson and not say anything. She actually sort of...enjoyed this particular form because it wasn't reeeeeeeally specific to Divination. Her and Lewis communicated with their eyes all the time. It was actually what had gotten them through their roughest patch last term. The things their eyes had said to one another. "It's a form of divination where you read the eyes of another. Interpret the reflections you see there. Sort of Divination's way of turning the phrase 'eyes are the window to the soul' only in this case it is scrying." Instead of windows...or something.
And...what had that voice been?!
o_______________O Callie was wondering if someone would bring up that cliche. "Exactly Miss Hollingberry. That phrase is exactly correct when practicing Oculomancy. Good job. Basically one can categorize some forms of this practice as scrying for the eyes." The girl, despite her unusual perkiness, still seemed to be thinking along the same capacity as usual. Quote:

She hadn't ever thought about the world outside living at home with mom and dad.
She blinked and then tuned back in.
...but anyway. "In answer to your question, though, Oculomancy is when you look into a person's eyes and use the reflections you see to come up with a reading," she said. "Good, good Prefect Greingoth." Callie couldn't understand why a few professors had told her to watch out for this one, The past two terms that she had attended her lessons, the Minister's daughter was nothing but an angel. She participated, helped with that wagon disaster in her first lesson last term, and answered her questions correctly. Quote:

She was way better than the Centaur, basically because she didn't have hooves... which made her more relatable and easier to connect with.
Louisa was about to smile at Vickers for being here as always when the weird voice echoed in the room urging the professor to talk already. Her mouth hung slightly open, her eyes bulging out a bit as she stared at where the voice came from. What on earth was that? Galileo? Nope.
And the professor obliged. The Ravenclaw managed to turn her attention back to the woman after an extra moment of staring at the anonymous. So they were going to learn about Oculomancy not Occlumancy. Hmmm. She didn't know much about that, really. Her hand was in the air nonetheless to offer what she knew. " It's a practice where the diviner studies the eyes of a person, their shape, color and even the reflections in said eyes. That's as a way of interpreting the personality of the individual, or if the diviner is good enough, see beyond personality to clues about their life circumstances." When she put down her hand, her gaze fell on her table companion and noticed that he was staring already. Louisa simply grinned at him. The confused look on Louisa's face from the voice emitting from behind her was pretty comical to see but she didn't say anything about it but commented on her answer. "Exactly! All of those things are involved in the various forms of Oculomancy. And we will be studying one of those branches today." Quote:

Once she was next to Kurumi, she poked her best friend in the side and smiled at her. She was going to miss these moments next year when Kurumi was gone and Selina was lacking in the best friend department, but they would write, yeah?
Turning away from Kurumi when the lesson started, Selina tuned into Elwood. Scribbling down on her parchment as fast as she could, the redhead looked up from her paper when she heard the random voice. What in Merlin's name? Ugh, whatever. This lesson was about Oculomancy. OH OH! She had read about that during her... extra studies.
Her hand shot up in the air, "Proffesor, its a type of divination where you look into someone's eyes and read their reflections." Actually, to be more precise it was a type of scrying, which usually was not a good thing for Selina. It really confused her head, she always saw weird things, which- for her gift- wasn't so weird. Whatever. "That is one way you can perform this type of Divination, good Selina." Callie smiled at the girl. Such a bright kid. She knew that she had probably actually read about the subject before. Hannah agreed with the voice, but she wanted to know who said that and what was going on. Her prefect had already beat her to the punch so she would wait and see what the answer was.
Oculomancy. Hmmm... "Professor it has something to do with using a persons eyes to read them." She wasn't sure about every little detail but she knew that she was on the right track atleast. "Good, yes dear." Professor Elwood nodded at the Slytherin's answer and made a mental note to go on further as she explained it. Quote:

He was not looking forward to looking at someone's eyes when they got to the practical part of this lesson, that was for sure. "Professor, it's divination that involves reading the reflection in someone's eye," he stated, raising his hand. The Greingoth male.
Calista hadn't had as much interractions with him as she had with his sister but he seemed alright. A Hufflepuff so he couldn't be too big of a trouble-maker, at least that's what she thought of that house. "That is certainly one of the more popular forms of the art, yes. Good job Mr. Greingoth." "Or something like that," she muttered afterwards. That was right. Right? AWKWARD STARE AROUND THE CLASSROOM.
Bliss twiddled her thumbs. She thought she was right, after all her dad had told her all about different mind reading skills after he had told her that she might be telepathic. That was still a shock. She didn't even WANT to be telepathic, think about about all the trouble it would cause. There would be upsides, but there'd be downsides too. Plenty of them. Eh, well..she'd cross that bridge when she had to.
Focus-on-the-Professor. "Thoughts and feelings can definately be mixed in with your interpreations, good point of view on that." Callie hadn't expected that as one of the main answers but she appreciated the fact the girl gave the class a new way to look at the exercise. Quote:

Blink.Blink. Where on earth had that voice come from? The third year tilted her head to the side with a curious expression before shrugging it off. She was sure they'd find out soon enough. Oh and Oculomancy? Ella had heard of that before. It was all about the eye contact, yeah? "Professor, this is when someone reads the erm...reflections in one's eyes." She figured it was probably a lot like a really intense staring contest or something along those lines. Seemed legit. "Yes a form of Oculomancy does depend on the reflections created in the gazers or the subject's eyes." The students were much more educated on the subject than she had imagined. It proved they were smart and read ahead. Quote:

Belle smiled at the professor giving her goodbye speech.
Then the professor asked a question. What is oculomancy? Belle heard that term before. She did not know where. Belle raised her hand and said, "Professor i know it is the study of predicting the future through the eyes." That is all she knew. She knew occulmency was the study of the mind, well trying to read your thoughts. Not a very detailed answer but still technically correct. "Yes, very good." Quote:

...and then a speech was being given. Erm...He wasn't a seventh year and all that. It didn't apply to him. So, the Slytherin sat there rather uninterested in the potential emotional display. He didn't really deal with those well...Kinda like when Cookie was talking to him about Walnut...It. Was. Awkward.
Hearing her question, he was in the process of answering...when everyone had jumped on it at once. His eyebrow arched and lips crooked to the side...Dylan was clearly amused..."I'm going to chance a guess and say it has something to do with the eyes." It was said out of sarcastic amusement, of course...He was admitting it.
The Captain didn't care, of course. What was he so smug about?
Calista eyed the Slytherin Captain as he was all smiles and then gave his answer. He was probably just trying to act cool for the girls in the room and she really didn't see a need to embarrass or call him out. "Yes, Mr. Montmorency, the eyes are sort of essential in today's lesson."
le sigh Quote:

She then raised her hand and answered, "Oculamancy is studying the characteristics of peoples eyes to tell the the future". She was a bit scepical how that would actually work but she was willing to atleast try it even if she had her qualms about believing anything from it. "Yes very good." Callie had seen to all of the hands raised and was glad to see most knew what she was talking about ready to move on? Quote:

There were professors being eaten around here, and yeah...Sierra just wanted to check and make sure there wasn't a little something extra lurking in the corners.
Oh they had noticed? Callie asked herself as if the plethory of confused looks, heads being tilted, and occasional look of pure horror wasn't enough to already answer that. She really should have given them a warning before hand should she have? What with Professor Burbage gone missing and other strange things happening around the Castle. "Everyone it's nothing to worry about I just have a few friends here to help us out with our activity. Which we will be moving onto shortly."
Repeat, nothing to worry about!
Aright time to move on. "The majority of you all mentioned reflections in your definitions of Oculomancy and that is correct but today we won't be studying the scrying meathod of the subject. Instead I would like us all to focus on the other portion, the characteristics of the eyes that will allow us insight into the person's personality and characteristics which let us make inferences into what situations they excell and fail at or any other path they may travel."
The Divination Professor walked back to her desk from the board and sat on it's front facing the class. "Prefect Carter here has mentioned color and shape of eyes, do you all know of any specifics in this area and their meanings to Oculomancy?" Examples people, the activity will commense soon enough. |
