Hogwarts' seventh years, as per suggestion by a Board of Governors member, are able to be recognized in front of their peers this term with a small ceremony before the feast. Similar to the way first years are Sorted in front of their peers, seventh years may come to the front of the staff dais, where the Sorting Hat, a stool featuring their diploma, and the Headmistress are waiting.

Seventh years should shake hands with the Headmistress, receive their diploma, and then put on the Sorting Hat and sit on the stool for a brief photograph, which their family will receive via owl post in four to six weeks. They should then wait for the applause and cheers of their peers to die down before removing the Hat and returning to their appropriate House Table.

The ceremony is optional, although wouldn't it be silly to avoid receiving such lavish attention when you're going to be sitting at the feast anyway?
