That should have been clear, since what looked like an argument earlier was surely not one between friends, at least for now. Ethan seemed surprised that she was friends with Elliot, which Cora could understand. They were just so opposite. But Cora saw the best in others, and saw what was beneath Elliot. She had wanted to say all this, yet was still recovering, so she managed only, "Yes, we met before our first year at Diagon Alley." Cora was so terrified of Hogwarts back then.
Cora froze up as she realized Ethan noticed she was sad. Guess she didn't fool anyone. She did NOT want this to be about her and her problems. She did think it was sweet of him to care, but no words left Cora. Maybe you just don't use it often. Cora pondered what this could mean, but would not bring it up now.
She stared at Ethan, not sure of what to say. She did not want to bring up the story again so soon, it had happened long ago and Cora should be over it right now. What was Eliza doing?!! Cora tensed a bit, and then took a deep breath. Eliza was covering up for her.
Would Elliot and Ethan believe this? Cora was doubtful. Not to mention the WORST liar in history. Cora knew she should back up this story, and hesitated nervously at first. With a desperate and relieved look to Eliza, Cora smiled slightly. Then, pushing her brown curls from her face, she nodded in agreement with Eliza. Cora wanted to reassure her friends, but there was NO WAY they would believe her. Was there? No. Cora promised to explain this all eventually, with whoever asked. Her father was not a light subject, and Cora hated ruining the mood. Of course, if they pushed, Cora was not one to refuse. Cora always got the feeling that Elliot saw through everything. She was Cora's closest friend, only one of two from first year. She couldn't just lie to her, could she? Cora supposed that if Elliot could tell what Cora was thinking then it wouldn't really be a lie, after all.
Cora was relieved that Elliot was being nice to Eliza (for now). She didn't quite expect that. Elliot's skeptical smirk told Cora she DEFINITELY knew something was up. Cora decided to play along until she was called out on it, so as her cheeks grew redder, she repeated. "Yes, we bumped heads. And um, there aren't any bumps because well, it just happened. Probably will show up soon." Cora said casually. She actually thought she sounded convincing, although she secretly hoped Eliza had gone for something more fail-proof. She was relieved that her face was drying up now, and hoped her eyes didn't show any signs of redness. Cora could sense Eliza feeling uncomfortable, and knew she should be speaking up more. She had been silent for too long, and that would definitely go noticed. Not like Cora was so outspoken to begin with, but she was responsible for contributing every now and again. Oh no. Ethan was definitely not buying the story. Cora sighed inside. She had to break her silence at some point, and took a deep breath. When Ethan turned back to her, his soft voice made Cora feel so guilty.
Her eyes locked with his, and she knew she just could NOT lie to Ethan. Or Elliot. She would feel bad about it. Elliot's words "too nice" echoed in her head, but Cora figured for her friends it was different. She considered things for a moment, and then heard, "is that what happened?" Ethan's concerned look made it so she couldn't look away. She couldn't remember if she was breathing, and then spoke. "Actually, that isn't true."
Cora looked at the ground. Be brave. "Eliza was just trying to be nice. Thank you, by the way." She looked to Elliot, hoping she wouldn't be angry. "It's nothing, really. I was just telling Eliza about how my father...died. It happened a while ago. Not quite something I like to talk about, though." Cora said this stronger than when she began. Please don't feel sorry for me. Cora did not want all of this attention, but they needed to know. Quote:

And although she should have kept her mouth shut, she still couldn't picture herself hanging Cora out to dry. Oh thank goodness, she thought as Cora explained why Eliza had lied. She stood firm and looked at Ethan and Elliot, hoping they'd understand, but also showing them that if they snubbed her for this she would still feel she'd done what she thought was best. She gave a sideways smile to Cora, to apologize for putting her in this situation and to thank her for trying to get them out of it. Quote:

Elliot wasn't stupid. BUt she played along...for now. "Eliza...I'm Elliot. Elliot Morganzo. You're a first year?" she asked, her voice's tone a bit like...stone? Because she was withholding judgment..for now. "My favorite class? Transfiguration. Why? Because I'm excellent at it." No other reason was needed...she sent a smirk to Ethan...hehehe. The homework room...poor guy had to endure she and Minnie...
When she met his eyes, she knew...they both agreed! This youngling was totally lying! Why, though? Because you didn't lie without a reason! Hmm. Elliot just didn't get it. She shot a look at Cora, now...waiting for her response...
Cora saaaaid that was the truth, but Elliot narrowed her eyes...come on, sweetie? You think Elliot is that thick?! But she didn't call her out on it. ..for now. For now for now FOR NOW. HMPH...
But then she confessed it all...OH Merlin. About her..father? ELliot couldn't help but be a bit offended...she had told this stupid little firstie something that she hadn't even told Elliot yet?! Elliot cleared her throat, though and tried not to seem too...pouty. "I see. We don't need to talk about it again, though...since..." yeah. It seemed to have made Cora upset.
Elliot was a bit...jealous, yeah.
She raised her eyebrows at Eliza..."Good kid, lying for a friend." She said with an approving nod, however jealous she felt...hmph. Quote:

Elliot was allowed to be a little condescending, for the moment. "Oh, transfiguration was...an interesting lesson." She gave another invisible eye roll when she thought of how that older boy had been doing some sort of rock star routine with the girls in class. Since Elliot hadn't asked Eliza what her about her classes in return, she thought it was safe to say that Elliot didn't care. Knowing she herself had only asked as a conversation filler anyway, she wasn't too offended by it. The older girl certainly was sure of herself though, but maybe that was still part of the high and mighty "I know you're lying" role. Uh oh. What was that in Elliot's expression when Cora had confessed? Not...mad, she didn't think. That was a good sign. But there was something else. She was...hurt? No. Eliza didn't think her little lie had hurt anyone's feelings. If it had, she would apologize right away. She wasn't really sure, but she would make it a point to not aggravate the girl any further, unless it was necessary.
Still a bit puzzled about how Elliot was feeling, she realized she was now addressing her. Did she just...approve of my lying to her? Eliza hadn't expected that, but she was glad the girl didn't hate her guts. So Elliot understands, that's good. Hopefully Ethan is as level-headed. She looked at Elliot and sincerely said, "Thanks... I um, I'm sorry I lied to you." She shrugged and gave a look that said "you know how it is". Still wanting to smooth things over a bit more, she added, "Cora probably would't have gotten into it had I not been so curious." She added a quick, "Sorry." Whether she meant it more for Cora or the other two she wasn't quite sure. All she knew was Cora didn't want to talk about this anymore, so she asked Elliot another question. People like to talk about themselves right? She hoped this whole thing could blow over and Cora could relax again. "Hey, sorry I forgot, but what year are you again, Elliot?" Ethan kept his eyes on Cora as she confirmed Eliza's story. He nodded skeptically, he could tell it wasn't true - those bright red cheeks were a dead giveaway - but if she didn't want to tell him what was really going on, then perhaps it was something personal that wasn't his business. He wouldn't pry any further.
The fifth year shifted uncomfortably in his seat and opened his mouth to change the subject or relieve the tension... when Cora began to confess the truth. Oh.. Ethan's eyes widened slightly and his face fell a bit. Her father.. died? The fifteen year old felt really bad - not so much in pity, though he did feel some sympathy for the girl... but more for putting her on the spot when she obviously didn't want to share that. "Look, Cora... I'm really sorry," he began, he had only been concerned for her well-being and didn't mean to make her feel worse. "Of course we don't have to talk about that..." He glanced over at Elliot as she shared his sentiments... only in a much different tone. He contemplated what that might mean for a moment when he heard her next words and frowned. That sounded like something his mother would say. He could not say he agreed with lying... but he sorta understood why the younger girl did it. But maybe she could have handled it differently.. or just left it up to Cora.
It didn't really matter now though, and he could tell Eliza felt very uncomfortable, especially under Elliot's scrutiny. As she kept apologizing, Ethan said, "Hey... don't worry about it." Best to just change the subject... and Eliza seemed to be trying to do so as she asked them about their classes. "Herbology's always been my favorite... anything you like yet?" he asked the first year. The first year at school always seemed to be the most overwhelming. Transfiguration? He took one look at Elliot's smirk and chuckled. Homework had definitely proved to be interesting...
