Eliza blushed when Cora said she was a good artist. “Thanks,” she smiled and laughed. “Yeah I guess it would be easy to say that since you’ve never seen a phone before.” She put her sketchpad away and said, “And not to toot my own horn but I think they looked about right.”

Eliza tried to picture herself in a crowded stadium, flying dangerously high on a broom. She wasn’t sure if she’d ever be that comfortable, but she wasn’t going to rule it out. “Thanks,” she said again and smiled.

She let out what she hoped was an inaudible breath of air. She was mentally crossing all of her fingers and toes that she hadn’t gone too far with her nosy question. She just really wanted to understand.

As soon as Cora said her dad worked at the Ministry, she knew it must’ve been something terrible that happened. Her father had wanted to work there, but her mother forbade it. She’d heard too many horror stories about workers having trouble with the secrets they kept, or with whomever they kept them from. She listened intently as Cora told her account of what happened that night.

Her eyes widened as the tale went on. She tried to regain control of her expression. She wanted to be helpful, not stir up anxiety in the poor girl. She found herself reaching out to lightly touch Cora’s arm as she went on. Hoping not to interrupt her, she let her arm drop back down and nodded to show she was following. She couldn’t imagine the panic her family must’ve felt as they watched their husband and father be so helpless to protect himself or them.

When Cora had finished, she found herself struggling for the right words to say. Tears had begun to form in her own eyes as she watched Cora wipe hers away. Careful not to stutter, she said, “Cora, I am so, so sorry.” She wanted to be strong for her friend, so she choked back her tears. “That must’ve been so hard for you and your family.”

She looked at the girl whom earlier she had placed so far beyond herself in life and the knowledge of magic, and saw that she was not so different from herself - from anyone really. Any person anywhere could be struggling with something like this, she thought. She was glad that Cora had shared this personal moment with her. She would not forget it, ever. Eliza felt that maybe Cora was supposed to drop her book on the train earlier that term. Maybe Eliza was meant to help Cora somehow. She seemed fine at school, sure, but she knew a life touched by such loss must not always be what it seems.

“I…I know that your mom is, um, a bit strict now - and understandably so,” she added “but I just want you to know that if you or your family ever need anything, I’m sure my parents would do whatever they could to help out. Even though your mom’s never met them or anything…” She shifted the strap of her bag. “And thank you. Thank you for sharing that with me. That was really brave.” She gave her a small smile.

Eliza wasn’t sure what to say next. Any trivial class talk felt like it would just wash away Cora’s honest moment. Not wanting her silence to make Cora feel awkward though, she finally said, “So um, do you know those kids over there?” She gestured to the ones by the chairs that had been talking loudly earlier.

Cora blushed. She couldn't believe she had really talked THAT much, let alone about something so personal. She didn't know what came over her. Letting her feelings out like that was NOT something she liked to do. Listening, that was what she did. Never talking.

Embarrassed, Cora wiped her eyes. Eliza was being so sweet about things. She wasn't used to this, not at all. And on top of everything, Cora could tell that Eliza was tearing up. She had even made ELIZA sad. Not planned at all, it just sort of slipped out.

"It's fine, but thank you," Cora finally managed. "It was a long time ago. But I guess it explains my mom a bit," Cora said, with a somewhat fake smile. Cora was happy and bubbly and shy, that was who she is. Not emotional and sad. "That's really sweet of you." Cora knew her mom would never allow help, but Cora would keep this in mind anyway. No sense in saying that to Eliza. Eliza somehow seemed to really understand.

Cora gasped at the next thing Eliza said. Was she actually BRAVE? No. That was never something that described Cora. Still, something inside Cora made her feel differently for just a second. Then it was gone. "Me? Brave? Are you sure you have your head on straight?" Cora attempted to joke. "I've never been brave."

Cora then looked to where Eliza was pointing. Elliot and Ethan. She had almost forgot. And they were looking at her. "Um, yeah. I do." Should she say something to them? She didn't want to leave Eliza, but maybe she didn't have to.

SPOILER!!: ELLIOT AND ETHAN

Dani...how was she doing in France?! Was she being eaten alive by all those snooty girls?! Hopefully not, or Elliot would be finding and torturing many French girls over the summer...hmph.

Elliot, too, saw the ghost glide in...Merlin, she never came in here! Elliot eyed her, and on hearing the boy's comment snorted..."Well obviously you're in the right house...good job," she said super sarcastically...she wondered what in the world the Grey Lady was doing in here!

That was proving difficult, however, as the boy was presently all sorts of distracted. The fifth year had lost his train of thought with that letter having tried to finish it numerous times and his mind just wanted to focus on other things. Deciding just to finish it later, Ethan folded up the parchment and turned to put it in his messenger bag. As he did, a familiar face across the room caught his eye.

Was that Cora?
The fifth year watched for a moment, wondering why the girl looked so sad. His gaze lingered on her for a moment until a voice on his other side caught his attention. Was that Elliot girl actually attempting a normal conversation with him?

"Yeah... I'm new..."
he started, somewhat surprised. "I transferred here a few weeks ago from a school called Beauxbatons."

No sooner had he gotten those words out when a ghost drifted past his vision. A ghost?! That was... interesting. "There's a ghost in here," he mumbled to no one in particular, not really aware of saying at aloud. And, just because he felt himself staring at the spectral being, knowing it was rude to do so without speaking, he added a "Hello, Miss..." to the ghost. Because she was clearly a woman and clearly his elder.

Cora's cheeks were warm as she looked at Elliot and Ethan. Turning her head, she tried frantically to wipe her face off. She did NOT want Ethan to see her crying. OR Elliot. Her heart was racing as she looked back.

Almost tripping over the edge of a chair, Cora looked at them and smiled shyly. "Hi Elliot. Hi Ethan," Cora said, blushing. She was glad to see they were getting along better than how she thought they were before. "I didn't know you two knew each other," she commented. Who would have thought? Her best friend and her new, umm, friend. She looked at them pleading, wondering if she was convincing enough.

"This is Eliza," Cora added. She hoped Eliza didn't mind.
