Hogwarts RPG Name:
Harvey Jarvis
Second Year
Default
Horses Forever! l l Writer for Life l Yearbook alumnus

Character Name: Veronica (Vee) Dartry

Character Age: 11 (turns twelve October 19)

Year in School: First

Wand: 11" maple, unicorn hair

Pet: Grey cat named Berry

Physical Description:

Tall for her age, willowy and graceful in her movements. Red-brown curly hair just below her shoulders. Blue eyes, dark lashes. Very pale skin and some freckles which become much more visible after a day spent in the sun - usually wears sunhats in such situations. A single dimple when she smiles, left cheek. Comfort over beauty, though is not fully oblivious to fashion and appearances - prefers sporty tomboyish look, though enjoys bright colours, artsy.

Personality

Quite outspoken, doesn’t take orders from anyone and stands up for herself as well as others. Has a lively sense of humour which frequently gets her into trouble, seeing as she’s often the one pulling pranks (she idolizes Fred and George Weasley). She likes a good laugh, and knows how to laugh at herself too, though this is not necessarily indicative of a very high self-esteem. Quite the opposite, Vee pretty much constantly feels the need to prove herself, though whether to herself or to her family, she probably doesn’t even know herself.

Brave, though she does not think so herself. Family history has made her stronger than she thinks she is - Vee tends to judge herself, and others, rather severely, not to mention hastily. Though often a good judge of character, she may be too quick to jump to conclusions at times.

Though quite outspoken, she does not open to people that easily, half the time feeling as if she were acting a role when she’s around others. There are several topics she does not feel comfortable discussing with the vast majority of people, and she will get sulky and aggressive if pressed too hard. She has no problem saying ‘no’ to people, and may speak out of turn if she feels someone is prying too much. She generally doesn’t care what people say or think about her, though there are certain topics about which she is very touchy and comments relating to these might easily be taken personally and she’ll feel hurt by them, though they might not have been intended this way.

Intelligent and clever, witty. She’s rather creative - enjoys conversations and activities which challenge her, give her a sense of satisfaction at the end of the day. She never gets bored - even with nothing to do or nobody to play with, she’ll find herself something to do, being quite resourceful.

Family

Pureblood English family, though with Irish roots - still have house in Ireland they visit regularly for summer, Christmas and Easter sometimes too. Vee’s parents - Henry Dartry and Willow Casey (Dartry when married).

Vee is the youngest of four children, and strongly suspects she was an accident, a suspicion the behaviour of the rest of her family somewhat supports. She has three older sisters: Amber (18), just graduated fro Hogwarts and applying for position of Chaser on one of the English Quidditch teams, Deirdre (21), working for the Ministry in France, and Viola (24), working in the States as Professor of Charms in one of the Magical schools there (Vee doesn’t know the details).

Vee gets along best with Viola, the eldest, who in many ways was a mother figure for Vee when their Mum died - Vee was eight at the time. Vee and Viola are apparently most like their mother, but after the witches’ death Viola decided she needs a change of scenery and so she left to the States in the hope of finding some peace of mind. She keeps in regular contact with Vee of course, but only ever sees her for Christmas and possibly over summer for a short while, prioritizing her own comforts over her sister’s needs. She’s also recently engaged, which gives her even less time and attention to give to her sister.

Amber and Deirdre are most like their father - proud, insensitive, selfish, stubborn, and generally of a personality which clashes with Vee and Viola’s (another reason for which Viola left). Vee is not feminine and elegant enough for these three, too eccentric, asks too many strange questions, does not care about appearances as much as they do.

After their mother’s death, they proved to be of little support to Vee, and so the girl drew into herself, learned to put up an act when around others because she was forced to do so with her family. They didn’t want to talk about what happened because it was too painful, and Vee could see this so she didn’t push the topic. They constantly criticize her though, and Vee rarely hears any words of support from them - if anything they come from Viola, but the eldest girl’s rather strict nature also makes these compliments rare.

The house in Ireland they visit is close to that of her paternal grandparents, with whom Vee doesn’t have the best contact either, as they are too much like her father. After her mother’s death she has not had close contact with her maternal grandparents, mainly due to her father’s negligence of the communications, though this gets better when she leaves to school and begins to make an effort herself, and doesn’t have the rest of her family poring over her shoulder, telling her what to write or what not to write and some such.

She does not really have contact with any of her aunts and uncles, though she has more than she’d care to count. They all visit both sets of grandparents at different times, and are not particularly close.

All her family went to Hogwarts. Henry and Deirdre - Slytherin. Amber - Gryffindor. Viola - Ravenclaw. Her mother Willow - Hufflepuff. Vee joins Ravenclaw.

History

Vee’s been home-schooled before getting her Hogwarts letter. Having sparse contact with her extended family, she does not know her cousins particularly well. She used to play with the Muggle children in her neighborhood at times, but was not especially close with any of them, especially as she had to keep her family and identity a secret from them, and in turn them a secret from her family. Although generally tolerant of Muggles and Muggleborns, the Dartry’s were only so at a distance, they did not enjoy mixing with them themselves. Vee doesn’t stay in touch with any of them when she leaves for Hogwarts.

Reading Muggle authors, watching movies, painting and such more Muggle activities Vee had picked up from her mother, who had had a huge fascination with the non-magical folk, unlike her daughters or husband. Vee is the only one to have inherited this interest.

She’s been flying from an early age - having a sister obsessed with Quidditch, potentially a professional player, does that to you. She enjoys it, though can’t imagine actually wanting to pursue it professionally too - perhaps because Amber is already doing so, or maybe it’s just one of those things she likes doing for fun. Consequently, she’s not particularly sure she’ll want to try out for the team in school once she gets there. Same with painting.

She has a grey cat, Berry, who’s about two years old. She got him from Viola for Christmas the year before she came to Hogwarts - Viola had him before, couldn’t control him and so gave him to Vee, who has just as much trouble. However, she did think of a magic collar which makes Berry stay close to her and at least helps to stop him from terrorizing everyone else’s pets.

Best subjects: Flying (in her blood), Transfiguration (Fun, imaginative, and often a challenge, which she loves), Charms (Ditto. And requires wandwoork, usually, which is why she likes both these subjects - feels like she accomplishing something concrete)
Worst subjects: Divination (not patient enough and finds too little proof to believe it, though it is interesting), Ancient Runes (Numbers make no sense), Herbology (they’re all green plants, some more dangerous than others. What’s there to know?)
