She gave the girl inside the compartment a parting glance then closed the compartment door again, putting herself back out in the hallways. "I'm Sierra Greingoth, Slytherin house prefect," she said. "So you're a first year, I see." After all, it was clear by his robes he hadn't been sorted year. "You hoping for a certain house?"
She looked at him as if the next word out of his mouth would forever determine how she felt about him.
"I've heard a lot of people screaming about how happy they are to be going back," he explained. It said good things about Hogwarts, since back in public school all of his friends had dreaded the end of summer vacation. "You just are more like... chill. About going back."
Garrett examined the Prefect's badge that the girl wore, impressed in typical younger-child fashion. A badge meant that its wearer was distinguished in some way, and a Prefect's badge clearly meant that she knew magic and the school like the back of her hand. All he needed was proof of her prowess and hero worship would ensue. It was too bad she wasn't a boy, though he supposed they must have boy prefects at Hogwarts too.
"I'm Garrett Kendrick." Seeing the look she was giving him, he resisted the urge to squirm in his shoes. That was a pinning, potentially withering look, that was. After a few seconds of her scrutiny he suggested, "Slytherin?"
Seemed a safe answer.
