This year was going to be so much better, now that Ariadne had returned. Of course, OWLs weren’t something she was waiting for, but how good could it feel to be done with those by the end of this year?!
In the next moment, Gwen heard someone call her name. Her full name. Raising an eyebrow, the fifth year drew her attention away from the window in order to greet her friend properly. ‘Hi Ari’ No doubt it was her bestie… who else would have the slightest hint of what her middle name could be? Smh. But she wasn’t the only one happy to see the Gryffindor. ‘Meyow’, Jinx looked curiously at the girl before his eyes fell on Pluto. His mate was back.
Exciting news?! Truth be told, Gwendolyn hadn’t expected her friend to ask one of those boring ‘how are you’ questions, but what Ariadne said definitely surprised her.
Blink. Blink.
A diary? A coded one? This made Gwen’s eyes go wiiiiiide. ‘Of course!’, she beamed, eagerly waiting for Ari to pass her the diary. She only gave a quick look at the page her bestie showed her, and realized that the maximum number was 9. Interesting… But what was Ari saying? Against her will, Gwendolyn raised her eyes from the interesting diary and looked back at her friend. ‘Heh… thanks’, she showed a smug at her comment about being a Ravenclaw.
‘Well…’ Eh. What did she think of it? ‘First of all- how did you find it?’, she raised an eyebrow at her friend. Not that she woldn’t have searched in the whole house if she were Ari… Besides- she did look through her mother’s old photo albums, so mehhh. She shouldn't be talking. ‘I think I can crack the code!’, the Ravenclaw nodded, examining the page. ‘But it will take some time. I have a few guesses so far…’, she mused, remembering one of the Arithmancy lessons… the one when Hadley brought a box, which would only open if you got the code right. Maybe watching her dad work for a while would finally pay off? Hopefully this wasn’t THAT complicated. Sneaky, Ava Marchbanks…
Gwen was practically stuck there, examining the diary. After a while, she decided not to be rude, and listen to what Ari had to say. Jory? What about him? ‘He’s ummm’ That question was so out of the blue that Gwen was completely oblivious to where Ari was going with this. ‘He’s a good friend’ Maybe Ariadne didn’t even want to know what she thought. Was it just to bring up the subject? Mehhh. Gwendolyn tried to convince herself that this wasn’t that much of a big deal. She glimpsed out the window, but as she heard her Gryffindor friend say something, she immediately looked back at her.
Errrr.
He had a new haircut? ‘I haven’t noticed…’, she started saying, but suddenly stopped. She would get it in…

‘What’s your point?’ Staaaaaare. For once in her life, Gwendolyn couldn’t figure what was going on with her friend. Merlin’s beard. How did they even end up discussing Jory’s haircut?!? Gwen would surely have a reason to be suspicious about it. Hmph. Jory and his new haircut, she imitated Ariadne with a high pitched voice in her head. What was going on?!
As soon as she had mentioned the diary Gwen looked like she was scheming in her mind. At first she thought the Ravenclaw would accuse her of stealing, but the only thing she could sense in Gwen's tone was mild curiosity.
'It's one of the perks that come with my mum moving away to France. As soon as I got back I turned the house upside down.' Not very subtle, but her grandparents didn't seem to be bothered.
'And I found this in the attic, in a box with my mum's old stuff.' Nothing else of interest though.
'You can?!?' Ariadne got really excited. It was one of the rare moments when she lost all her composure.
'Hear that, Jinx? And Pluto?' And the whole train? 'Gweeeeen can crack the codeeee!' she sang. But then she calmed down. It would take some time.
'Oh.' What did she expect?
'You can have it for a while then.' the Gryffindor handed it over for good.
'Just...you know...don't lose it. And don't show it to other people.'
'That he is.' Ariadne nodded when Gwen described Jory as a good friend.
'And a good listener. And quite funny. Did I mention tall? And hardworking. Loyal too, like every Hufflepuff. He didn't even hate me for not writing to him for a whole year. Where else would you find someone like that?' Ari rambled on, failing to notice Gwen's expression.
'How could you not notice?!' The boy didn't get a new haircut every day! What was the point?
'Whatever do you mean?' Couldn't they just sit there and talk about boys? Wait...since when were they doing that? Was she....nah, impossible. Or is it?!
'He was extremely cute when I kissed him on the cheek this summer, got all red.' Ariadne continued. Not the most perspicaceous of people, but even so she felt Gwen's imminent exasperation.
'Let's make a deal.' she grinned mischeviously.
'I'll stop the minute you tell me your middle name.' She had been trying to discover that for ages.
'Till then, I must tell you I think I'm in...' Better leave the sentence open. Gwen's last chance to confess.
'Love with him.' she added after a few seconds of silence.
'But I don't know how he feels about me and I need someone to find that out.' Ari stared pointedly at Gwen. The Ravenclaw was trapped! Even Pluto covered his forehead with one of his paws.
