Then he grabbed her hand. Ellie had NOT been expecting that.
She turned her eyes to him and tried to read his expression, but couldn't really. All she could tell was that he was very clearly NOT happy. Almost worried, even. "What's with you?" she whispered to him. Ellie was quite popular. Of course she was, though - Quidditch Captain, champion of the term, one of the few that would be departing from the school for good. Max didn't mind that everyone wanted Ellie's attention. He was glad she was getting all the love and attention she had deserved for so long.
But his instinctive hand-hold got her attention, and as soon as he felt her gaze, he wished he hadn't done it. He didn't want to talk about this now. He didn't want to cry. He didn't want to make a scene. But when Ellie asked him what was wrong, Max's face grew hot and he held his breath in an attempt to prevent a sob that would escalate into a series of sobs. Once he started, he wasn't going to be able to stop. He was supposed to be strong. Guys weren't supposed to cry.
Though, unfortunately, Max wasn't like most guys.
Max shook his head and released Ellie's hand, folding his hands in his lap again. He stared down at them. "...Nothing," he said finally. "I'm just glad you're here." That was the easiest way of putting it. It was true, and Max had always treasured every moment he spent with Ellie. He just wished the end of their adventures at Hogwarts hadn't come so quickly. He also didn't want to ruin Ellie's mood, as her happiness was most important, so Max wholeheartedly expected her to drop it and bring it up after the feast.
When tears began to sting at his eyes, he did his best to blink them back. None fell - not until he thought, I'll hardly ever see her. What if she forgets about me? I don't want to lose my best friend. One lone tear dropped straight into his lap, leaving no trace on his face, and he wished more than anything that he could be graduating alongside the greatest friend he ever had.
