He was happy for Ellie, perhaps, but it wasn't the I'm happy for you so I'm going to smile and play along kind of happy. Deep, deep down in his heart he was happy for her. Next term, he would be surrounded by things that would constantly remind him of her - Quidditch, flying, red-headed students, stubbornness, Vindictus, the Ravenclaw common room, general beauty, friendship...

As a Hufflepuff boy approached and greeted Ellie, Max kept his head low. When the Hufflepuff asked her if she had to go, Max instinctively reached over and grabbed his best friend's hand. He squeezed it softly as if to say, I'm sad, Ellie. Ellie, please make the hurt stop. Ellie, please don't go. I don't want to be here without you.
