Anya smiled. This was going to be awesome! She and Penelope were going to be like sisters!

She nodded slowly. "Do you remember your mum at all?" she asked. Probably, right? Anya's earliest memories where when she was around two. And it sounded like Penelope's mom died pretty recently. Comparatively speaking anyway.

She nodded. "Yeah. She... she didn't even get the chance to name me." It was one of the village elders that took her in and named her. "My dad wasn't with my mom. So... I just... assume that he passed on before she did. They were just poor travelers and sick."

Which was still a problem in the rural East.

"I was there until I was three. I was kind of considered bad luck... so I didn't get out much." She played with a lone grape on her plate with the end of her fork. It was weird thinking about life back then.
