She had seen what one first year had had their boggart turn into in the dueling arena and had been rather amused at the comical form it had taken to be honest. Irony.

"I've been helping Selina study for her OWLs, professor," Kurumi explained. The woman probably could assume certain things from that sentence alone. And then the pieces sort of fell into place as to what the woman had asked her and she internally groaned. "Of course, professor," she said with a nervous nod. Within reason that is.

Just please don't tell me to test Selina's potion...

Kurumi's mind had only been able to focus on one thing due to the nature of their previous two essay assignments - and no, it wasn't cutting open creatures - but on a creature itself. Jobberknolls to be specific. And that linked to Memory Potions...which Kurumi really really wanted to brew in hopes that her missing ones would come back.

Maybe it was the whole fear that Selina had of the subject that the woman taught or maybe it was just that Lafay was bloody terrifying. It also did not help Selina's case that day because Lafay seemed to be in a very short mood. So all she did was nod her head to her Professor's acknowledgment and then sat down at her desk in a lax manner.

She shot up in her seat in fear when she heard someone address her, but when she noticed the familiar voice Selina smiled broadly at her best friend. Poor Kurumi had been subjected as of late to helping Selina with her potions OWL studying. The redhead had told her best friend on numerous accounts that it was hopeless, but she was determined. So when she said that she needed a break from potion testing Selina chuckled and leaned into her best friend, "Deal. I'm surprised you're not in the hospital wing yet from all my failed attempts."

But then she heard a voice that made her sit up in her seat and wipe the smile off of her face. Even though Lafay wasn't directly addressing Selina when she spoke to Kurumi it was a comment that invoked both girls. She sat quietly as Kurumi explained that she had been helping Selina study. Offering up to help her best friend she said, "Yeah Professor. And she's been amazingly helpful with the preparation."

She remained quiet after that as Lafay began the lesson. When she asked if they had any questions she was tempted to raise her hand and ask if she could flee to save herself from embarrassment. But she realized that was probably not the most rational of tactics... So she stayed silent.
"Mhmm... Well maybe I'll leave you partnered up then." She said and suddenly covered her mouth, and closed her eyes. She took a breath through her nose and then opened her eyes and removed her hand.

This probably made no sense to the woman, but Sierra had gone through the same ordeal that Kurumi had so there was a chance that it did. "What I mean is, if you have a complete gap in your memory, like someone literally took an eraser and erased memories from your mind as if they had never been there in the first place...could a Memory Potion bring those back?"
First question. Not a bad one... "For everyone who doesn't know, if a memory has been removed from someone's mind, and placed in a pensieve, does not mean that the memory is erased, it just isn't available to be viewed by another. The subject can still remember the memories." She said. "If, as Prefect Hollingberry's example suggests, someone casts a memory charm to obliviate certain memories from your mind, those remain dormant in your mind. They are not technically erased, but banished to the parts of your brain you do not use. I assume you all know that we don't use 100% of our brains. Depending on where the memory was banished to, there are memory potions that can move the memory to the parts of the brain that are used. Some unfortunately are so hidden, so imbedded, there are no charms or potions that will be able to help." She looked over to the prefect and smirked. "Good question."

Instead, he asked something as equally stupid, "Umm, professor, I have a question! Is Polyjuice Potion illegal?" Cos he imagined them being frowned upon, but he still desperately wanted to try it. This brought him onto his next question....

"Also... what is a fluxweed, and.... where does one find such stuffs?" He asked, as lazily as he possibly could appear. Oops, nope... he was going into babbling mode, "Cos I read about it in a really long book and it said something about mustard, which was really confusing." He paused, what USE was mustard to a potion? And it also said about being picked at full moons only, which sounded extremely inconvenient due to his laziness. Just confusing.

"Do you have any spare fluxweeds in your potions closet, professor?" He twiddled his wand carelessly through his fingers. Nothin' to worry about here.

Yes, he had looked up ingredients for Polyjuice Potion. Yes, he would brew and use it someday. And no, he was not going to mention that now.

Theo was subtle. OH yes.
"Polyjuice Potion is not illegal... it's controlled." She raised her eyebrows and muttered, "Or the ministry attempts to control it..." She then looked up and said. "What that means is Apothecaries and Potioneers are required to disclose how much Polyjuice they've made and keep records for whom they've sold it to."

Hecate blinked. "I have no spare anything in my stores." She said curtly. She didn't just GIVE students ingredients without a purpose! "Fluxweed, or Sisymbrium sophia as it's called by its Binomial name, is a weed that is indeed in the mustard family. This means that it's seeds can and are used as a spice; by grinding and mixing them with water, vinegar or other liquids, they can be turned into the condiment you all know as mustard. However depending on when it's picked, it has magical properties. When something is in flux it's changing... and that's what it gives to the Polyjuice."

"Professor, the wizarding folk make potions everyday...even some new ones that we have not even heard of. Is there an antidote for every single one just in case it misfires or can the Bezoar be used as the antidote for all potions?"
"The Bezoar is an antidote to most potions... not all." She said and shrugged. "Some wizarding folk do brew their own potions without the supervision or a Potions Master, who know what combinations of ingredients can do. There are many a victim of these people on the third floor in St Mungo's."

She pulled her sleeve up and showed her arm to the class. "Even very experienced Potions Masters can make irreversible mistakes."

The second year was pleasantly surprised to get a smile from Theodore, even if it was noticeably smaller than the one he gave to Sophie. Frown. At least it was something though. He couldn't stay mad at her forever, could he?

Hmm. Did Ella have any questions about potions? Well yeah, she had LOTS of them. Like...where did the creatures that were harvested come from? Did Lafay catch and kill them or were they already dead or EEP! Were they like...raised for potions?! That was a scary thought. Another thing she wanted to know was why one Little Lurker was inquiring about polyjuice potion. Not that Professor Lafay could answer that, exactly. But she WAS curious...because polyjuice in the hands of Theodore could lead to trouble. Instead of mentioning either of these things, Ella decided to inquire about one of her pastimes, photography. Well photos, more specifically. "Professor, I've read that one might be able to use a potion on muggle photos to make them move the way magical ones do. Is this true?" Because if it was, Ella had many photos she would need to change.
"Yes. There are potions that can do that... but it makes up what the motion will be." She said.

Now, on to the lesson... A potions question? There really wasn't anything she needed to ask that she hadn't already talked about with Lafay. Hmm... Okay, then. "Professor?" she asked, raising her hand. "In your opinion, what's the best way to bottle glory? You know, just in case anyone wanted to...ensure...they'd succeed."

*smirk*
She smiled. "That's a saying, Miss Greingoth... but liquid luck always helps." She winked.

This was something which he had often wondered.
"Veritaserum is a psychoactive potion used to obtain... information... from subjects who are unable or unwilling to provide it otherwise. This too is a highly controlled potion. It's illegal to give it to minors..." Though that had never stopped her. "It contains sedatives that will calm the subject, and something to allow inhibitions to no longer be a factor, plus something to make the subject feel safe and invincible. This allows the truth to come out."

She was about to organize her stuff when professor Lafay spoke up and say something that Sophie would NEVER expect to her from her.

Questions? She wanted them to ask her random questions about potions? That was weird... the Hufflepuff blinked a couple of times at the professor and listened as her classmates asked their own questions. She thought long and hard before raising her hand.

"Professor, do potions ever spoil? Like, if we brew a potion today and put it away for many, many years, then we get it and drink or use it... would it make us sick or would it still be perfect like in the day we brewed it?"
"Yes... it's a good rule not to take a potion that is over a year from completion date." She said. "This doesn't mean that the potion has gone bad. It's a precaution in case it has. Many years would be pushing your luck."

But the Professor starts off with something pretty open ended....Potions questions? Like literally the concoction or is it the subject matter they covered during the term? He shifted those icy blue glare gaze away when a question popped in his head. Well there was something he's been wanting to know...

Up goes the hand and the piercing blue gaze "Are you planning to use those Plimpy parts for our class anytime soon Professor? Or have they been...dispatched?" for galleons he means of course.
"They have not been dispatched... as you say. We will use them as we need them. Right now they are safe." she told the boy.

"Can one store a potion and for how long?" and she added, "can one brew a potion at home?". She had more... yet that would do for now.
"One year is the safe time to store a potion, and yes, a wizard of age can brew a potion from home. Though they cannot, or should not sell it." She responded.

Nigel only heard it mentioned very briefly in a book he read.
... Odd he would ask that.

"Essence of Insanity is a potion which causes irrational behavior... and the potion I was planning to teach today." She said. "So let me ask YOU this. What do you think would be the ingredients in the Essence of Insanity."
