And no.
Elliot DIDN'T know the name of the steering utensil, either. She had begun to worry about going in the water...was this transfiguration class or a boating instruction?! "It's some type of paddle...but I don't know the particular name. It most likely has a fancy name, like it's boat counterpart," she commented, still glaring at the boat with dislike...
Why was she mentioning the name of the paddle? Or lack of?
"Oh no, my dear, I think you misunderstood the question. I asked about the technique used to steer the coracle, not the name of the paddle," Isabelle replied with a smile.

She later inquired if it was possible to row a boat on ones own and a Coracle was suggested. "It is moved by an action called the skulling action - a series of a figure of eights in water" she said.

Alyssa had seen the men rowing them when she first saw what a Coracle looked like. It looked like they were placing the paddle in front of them and moving it in back and forth in a figure 8 formation. She tried to remember the various names for rowing maneuvres before raising her hand and giving her answer.
"Professor I know that when two oars or paddles are used its called rowing and when one is used it is called sculling. Next I know that they can't be using the regular rowing method because all they will end up doing is going in circles.
I'm not really sure what it's called but I believe the best technique they would use is called sculling in a figure-of-eight pattern. The paddle is placed towards the front of the coracle, pulling the boat forward, and the paddler sits in the middle of the coracle, rotating the oar a little bit and moving it in a figure 8 movement, while facing in the direction of travel.
"Skulling! Well done both of you, yes. A figure of eight movement is required otherwise you tend to go in circles." She'd tried during the summer period, when she was planning lessons for the term. It was fun actually, but anyway back to the lesson.

Nerida only knew one method of how boats move and that was rowing. Was using one paddle called rowing as well. Well it was worth a try guessing. She had heard her grandpa talking to his older friends about rowing, one was propulsion and sweep rowing and some more. "Is the technique propulsion or sweep rowing. Propulsion is a way of gliding downstream in a controlled way. And sweep rowing is..." And than she remembered... "Oh, wait nevermind on the sweep rowing that needs multile rowers."
"Technically not, although I do hope you will all sweep along in a controlled manner," Issy chuckled, smiling at the Ravenclaw as she moved over to the box by the side.
Picking out a couple of toothpick type match stick things, whatever one wanted to call them, Isabelle held them aloft for all to see.
"Now, this is what you will be using to create your coracle AND the paddle. Two new spells for you all. I'll demonstrate now, then you can come and collect some of these for practice." Giving herself some room, she placed one down on the floor and looked up to make sure they were all paying attention.
"This is the spell for the coracle...." Flicking her wand out, Issy pointed it downwards and did a full circle above the small stick.
"Vegrandis Navis!"
Almost immediately the stick began to curl around and join it's ends together, before expanding outwards and filling in the gaps underneath. After a few seconds the bottom of the coracle sealed itself and a fully formed one sat on the ground in front of her, with just enough space for one person. Smiling, she looked up.
"There, a simple enough wand movement as you can see. But quite a long spell. You need to add the emphasis on the IS portion of both words - Vergrand-IS Nav-IS. We'll get to the paddle a little later, but for now stick with this, and try to keep them about the same size as these two I made. Come and get some little sticks and you can start. Any questions, please ask." OOC: Follow all IC instructions carefully! I'm off to bed, but Issy is still there, so I'll answer any questions tomorrow. ^__^
