How had he been? William's frown deepened a little. "I've been... all right. It's strange: I feel fine, but people have been saying all sorts of things, things I don't remember or just don't know what they're talking about." He shook his head. "How have YOU been, though? Better now that all of us crazies are out of your pretty hair?"

That should earn him a smile.
