Well whatever, Nigel started taking notes on everything she said and wondered if he made up a stone would it be alright. "Professor, There is the Sun Stone and it represents power, energy and life." He wondered if there actually was a sun stone "Very good, the sun stone is certainly one and like you said represents power because of it's nature of being the most powerful object in our solar system." She nodded as she wrote it on the board, starting her list. Quote:

Figuring that her hand was already iin the air Indy just started talking. "The Earth stone..." She mused with a smile before she continued. "It represents security of home, family and friend." "Excellent! Wouldn't want to forget the stone dedicated to the planet we inhabit now would we Miss Hutchinson?" Callie smiled at the little girl before adding it to the list on the board. Quote:

But Blue, cause she was brave like that, answered the question despite the pain. "Umm, Professor, I think the fire stone is um heat and passion." Heat was probably wrong and it felt like she was missing some thing else.
Ah well.
BEAM. Heh. Passion such a...strange topic to discuss in a classroom full of kids. "Yes, but don't forget willpower and outside influences. Good." The Ravenclaw was basically right, definately good work from a first year. Quote:

And then she promptly broke it. "The Universe," Aspen spoke with a quiet, slightly bored tone. "It represents how small and insignificant we all really are in a comparative way. We're a speck, a flicker." Despite the obvious sarcasm she had just heard escape Miss Odessa's mouth, Callie was appreciative of the correct answer coming next. "Very good. Although it doesn't have to seem so depressing, it mainly shows us our place in the grand scheme of things." Another stone to add to the master list. Quote:

With a few taps of the chalk, it too was added to the Professor's board. Quote:

"Good, seems fitting no? What with Mercury being known to also represent war?" The blonde woman added it to the list.
What would Hufflepuffs know of war? heh. Quote:

The red head immiediately jotted this down on some parchment, now she would hopefully remember.
Hmmm..13 stones. The pout on Nessie's face grew. Surely she'd know at least one right. Then she remebered someone once talking to her about this or well a certain stone at least. "Um..Professor, I think there's a stone Venus and if I remember correctly its associated with love, fidelity and happiness?" It was more of a question, cause Nessie herself wasn't too sure if it was true or not. Hopefully it was and hopefully she hadn't made a full of herself by talking utter rubbish. "Good, Venus is represented with love. Being that the planet was named after the goddess of the same thing and our own planet and Venus being sisters, it only seems fitting." She nodded slowly and put it on the list. Good Hufflepuff. Quote:

"There is the Moon," she said with a hand in the air, "and it represents inspiration, intuition, and psychic ability." Too bad the last one didn't start with an I, so they could be called the three I's. It would have been cool, and easier to remember. "Great job Miss Reed. The moon, although it is not a planet, is very important to our readings." She smiled at the Slytherin before adding it too, to the list. Quote:

Louisa looked up into the woman's face with an amused smile, "Represents longevity, protection, and purification." Calista recognized the Ravenclaw Prefect from her last lesson and from around the corridors and smiled as she answered correctly. "Good work Prefect Carter, Saturn is the seventh planet but by no means any less important." Quote:

And then when Professor Elwood moved on to explain a little more about the subject he had to say it certainly sounded interesting even if he wasn't normally one to be too into the idea.
Gideon turned to the subject in their textbook to try and pick a stone to answer the latest question with, listening to those appeared more knowledgeable on the subject who were already answering. "Theres the water stone which represents compassion and healing." "Good job, water has always been related to Healing throughout many forms of magic, especially Divination." The Divination Professor nodded quickly and added it to the list on the board. Quote:

...and then she heard her name, causing her to sink just a little in her seat. Thanks for pointing out my mistake, PROFESSORRRRRR! Hmph. From that point on, she listened to the description of what they really were doing. She wouldn't suggest the wrong answer again. Why couldn't Hollingberry have gotten singled out anyway?! "There's the stone for Jupiter," she said, raising her hand. "It represents good fortune, expansiveness, and a gain of wealth and money." Sounded good to her.[/QUOTE] "Jupiter is a great answer Miss Greingoth, the largest of our planets and a great stone to see in your readings no matter how far out." The Slytherin Prefect was on the ball! Quote:

She didn't want to not participate, now that she was in the class. She was hyper-aware of the fact there were other Ravenclaws who had possibly given, well, interesting answers, though, so she put some thought into if she wanted to make a guess this time around. Shefound herself raising her hand anyway, which meant that she needed to speak. She'd look stupid if she didn't, at least.
"What about Mercury? That stone represents intellect, communication, media, and even education, among other things," she said, lowering her hand hesitantly. She really wasn't entirely sure of her answer. It was said now, though, and she couldn't take it back. So back to just quietly taking notes and hoping she hadn't looked like an idiot. "Yes, Mercury is very important!" Professor Elwood added it to the list quickly before going on. "This tiny planet is representing so many fine things for our self improvement and and communication with others we wouldn't want to leave it out."
No indeed. Quote:

How about the air stone? The second year had read a bit about that one. "Professor, there's the air stone. It has to with wishes, inspiration, and erm-dreams!" Callie smiled at the excited Puff before nodding at her answer. "Yes, very good the air stone is a very useful one." Quote:

Why hadn't her mum prepared her for this??? Then one popped into her head, Venus, love, beauty, etc. Just like the Roman goddess Venus. Addie raised her hand. "Professor isn't one Venus, and it stands for love and beauty." Right? Maybe. "That is true Miss Coral, and usually this stone is one of the prettiest physically in most set." Just a suggestion for her so she can find a pretty stone. Quote:

She heard one of her classmates ask about why was it only original 13 stones? She was curious about the answer too. "Yes, that is correct." The Universe stone was a popular one it seemed. She smiled at the Hufflepuff just the same and continued to the next student. Quote:

Please tell me one of the stones and what you think it would represent.
Jonathan thought of this through. What were they again? The professor did mention about the planets and technically some students already did. Jonathan raised his hand recklessly without even thinking it "The Water stone, professor" opppps. What did it mean again? Jonathan took a tiny time to give it a thought and finally remembered "It's reconciliation, cleansing and healing" he said in a more confused tone, not really sure if that answer is correct. But it's worth the try. Definitely. "That is correct, Mister Kim. The water stone is vastly important to our readings." She gave the Slytherin boy a happy nod and turned to see who was next. Quote:

So she could have been wrong. "The fire stone is an excellent answer." The Ravenclaw girl was perfectly right. Quote:

Since Kurumi had never actually studied any of this, she was sort of out of the loop when it came to possible meanings. However, as it became clear that they were simply stones that represented the planets, she felt a little more at ease. She knew about that, especially since the ones mentioned were, for the most part, associated with days of the week and that was something that was taken rather seriously in the culture she grew up in. Jotting down some notes, Kurumi couldn't help but think of a few questions and slowly raised her hand - especially since she was pretty sure that all thirteen had already been mentioned, so there was no need to repeat answers.
"Professor, why 13?" she asked, cocking her head to the side as she tried to make some sort of FACTUAL connection. "I know in some ancient cultures and beliefs that the number can represent a powerful solar symbol and ancient Egyptians believed there are thirteen steps upon the ladder that leads to eternity and when you reach that step you attain spiritual completion..." She was sort of just rambling off facts right now, grabbing at straws for some sort of connection, but she actually was genuinely curious as to why 13 stones as opposed to 12 or whatever other number. When Professor Elwood called on Kurumi Hollingberry she had expected to hear a name of one of the 13 stones but instead was met with a question. That was a good question. Calista herself did not really have much practice in Lithomancy herself but had done her research before deciding to tackle it for a lesson, and it so turned out that she had an answer for the Prefect. "Prefect Hollingberry brings up a good point, perhaps one that you all were wondering as well: Why does our reading include 13 stones?" She paused and returned from the board to her seat on the front edge of her desk. "Firstly let me just say that there are a few different types of Lithomancy readings where some use only 3 stones and another 16, but why 13 for ours?" She pointed at the list they now had on the blackboard behind her. Quote:

"The planets and heavenly bodies listed as the first eight on the list are just shy of being incomplete." Yes, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were missing--she didn't believe all that dragon dung about the latter no longer being a planet, in her eyes she just saw that as the big men being mean to the young a weak. Anyways.... "If you think about it, it make sense. One thing was that 13 was an ancient Holy number so it's no suprise really as to why that number was decided but in addition, back when Lithomancy was first started, in Ancient times when the Greek and Roman civilizations were young, how far could the naked eye see into the night sky? There were no telescopes. This is why only the moon, the sun, mercury, venus, earth, mars, jupiter and saturn are listed, most of which, hopefully you have noticed, are named or possess qualities of the two civilzations' gods." Yes, they were getting a little history but that never killed anyone. "However, some more recent studiers of the subject include the later discovered planets but we will be sticking with the original stuff."
Tossing a strand of hair out of her face, Callie began again. "Now as for the last 5, they are typically up to the reader and are usually earth bound things like elements or at least something to do with human beings. For the sake of keeping things sane, we are all going to use the same five personal rocks."
Once she had established some background on the rocks Professor Elwood decided they needed to move on. "So now that we have talked about the things we will use to do the reading, why don't we talk about what we will be casting them into. The feild, some call it, is made up of a string made out of whatever material you'd like placed on a flat surface. Typically the circle feild should be no larger than a foot wide to ensure a decent gathering of stones." She paused as she tried to think of how to phrase her next question. "The reading field is seperated into sections, does anyone have an ideas as to how many and what they stand for?" Definately an intermediate question but she felt they could handle it.
