I'm working on my first character and I know that shapeshifters/animagus' are really overdone, but something I was thinking about was having her be exceptional at Transfiguration and that one of her own personal goals be to become an animagus. Does that still seem like a better way to go about the whole "I want to be an animal" thing, or would I just be beating a dead horse/human hybrid?
Well, it's good that you understand that this is something that takes a lot of thought and experience from your character to achieve which is, infact, canon.

Now the fact that your character one day wants to become an animagus is an ok character trait, which would allow them to focus on their Transfiguration lessons but you must remember. Students wouldn't be able to acheive that feat until at least sixth or seventh year. Also ALL special abilities like that MUST be approved by the Headmaster Cassirin before you can rp them.

This would be best done by a pm to her with your thoughts and ideas clearly layed out.

Hope this helped!
