But she was trying to comfort him with those words. She had to. No one usually said that just for the sake of it. So... she needed something said in return. "Thanks!" And there was that big grin on his face as well. "Are you a big Quidditch fan?" Might as well get the conversation started right?
And before he knew it, he felt himself being hugged tightly. Alec turned to look up at Avery and his smile vanished. No no no! This was sad, yes, but he wasn't meant to make someone cry! And not one of his friends! "Avery!" he gasped, blinking up at her, "Are you okay?"
As for the question about whether he was close to Anya... Well, this could go on all day. "She's my bestest friend in the entire world," he said, "I've known her since we were three years old." ... He should probably add in the bit about her falling off her broom but Avery was hugging him again and he kind of liked it.
And... he was confused again. That's where she disappeared off to? ... To studying and books? "Next time, if you disappear for a long time, I'll come and find you and take you out for a picnic," Because she needed some time to herself as well!
Avery looked at Alec, he seemed doubtful, so she gave him a reassuring look.
"Don't worry Alec, no matter what you'll have tried your best! That's all you can do" She said, smiling at him.
Avery half smiled at Alec's sort of fake looking smile, then when he asked her whether she liked Quidditch, she grinned and nodded franticly.
"Of course I do! Who doesn't?"
Avery whipped her eyes dry.
"Sorry Alec, I was just remembering when I was in hospital for four years." She looked down at her knees,
"I hated it, all the pain."
Avery tried to smile, but inside she was kind of jealous,
"Awh, that's sweet that you've known her that long, I really hope she gets better soon!" She said, meaning it. Avery wished she had a best friend, someone she'd grown up with. But all of her old friends had left round about in the first year she was in hospital, they never checked up on her, they probably didn't even care if she died.
"Avery laughed lightly at Alec, you'd come and find me, huh? Thanks!" She said smiling, but inside she was crying.
