Soon, the time flew by, and December was upon them. One morning, Hogwarts woke to find itself covered in a foot of snow.
‘So, we still have snow left,’ said Fred that evening, after snowball fights had reigned supreme that day. ‘What we gonna do with it?’
‘Snowballs, on the back of someone’s head?’ suggested Secret.
‘Quirrell?’
After a few moments, the guys hid round a corner, three spherical objects of snow beside them.
‘Here he comes. You sure you know the spell?’ asked Fred quietly.
‘Positive.’
Secret muttered under her breath, and the snowballs lifted into the air. As Quirrell passed, they flew out and began to bounce off the back of his turban.
‘Oww, Oww!’ he shouted, running off down the corridor, the snowballs following.
The three burst into laughter.
‘Aha!’ screeched Filch, coming round the corner, no doubt attracted by the laughter. ‘I’ve got you now!’
‘Ah flying saucers.’ muttered Secret.
Soon the three were hauled up in front of McGonagall, trying not to laugh.
‘You two!’ she said, nostrils flaring. ‘I should have known! But now you’re leading Miss Snape astray...’
‘Professor, please, it was my idea! They just went along.’ interrupted Secret.
McGonagall looked at the young, flame haired girl. Then, she almost gave a small smile.
‘Oh, off with you all now. I expect you back here tomorrow to write a letter of apology at 6 ‘o’ clock.’ she said, waving them away.
The three left snappishly.
‘All that for bewitching a few snowballs?’ asked Fred.
‘Could have been worse, she could have told...’ began Secret.
‘Him?’ finished George.
Snape was sweeping towards them.
‘Yes.’
He swept past them without a word, and Secret breathed out. Then a hand rested on her shoulder.
‘Miss Snape.’
‘Awww, flying saucers. See you later guys.’ said Secret.
She followed her father down to the dungeons. Opening the door, she went in.
‘Now...’
‘Yes, I bewitched the snowballs.’ interrupted Secret.
He gave a smile.
‘Well, that’s that sorted. That and I would like you in my lessons to work on your own potion. There is no reason for you to be making potions that you have been doing since you were four.’
Secret grinned.
‘That is all.’
She left and was instantly faced with Malfoy.
‘Well, it’s our little potion prodigy.’ he drawled.
‘What do you want Draco?’ she snapped.
‘Look here girl, in this school; I’m Snape’s favourite student, not you. I’m the potions expert.’ he said.
‘Why, because your daddy’s a governor?’ she retorted.
‘Yes. Not because my father’s a teacher.’ he said, whipping his wand out.
Secret didn’t even have time to react. He hit her with a spell that made her fly backwards, crashing into Snape’s door.
‘Where’s daddy to save you now?’ he taunted.
‘SHUT UP! DON’T YOU DARE MOCK MY DADDY!’ Secret screamed.
He laughed, firing the same jet of light over and over again, making her cry out in pain, one hitting her nose, making it bleed.
‘MR MALFOY!’
Secret looked up. Standing there was her father, the look on his face the most furious and angry one she had even seen in her life.
‘What do you think you’re doing?’ he roared.
‘I-I-I’m sorry sir!’
‘That doesn’t cover it! 30 points from Slyhterin, yes, my own house, and both Professor Dumbledore and your father will hear about this! No get out of my sight!’
Draco, Crabbe and Goyle almost ran away. Snape helped Secret up and lead her inside his office. Once inside, he set to work fixing her nose.
‘I heard it all.’ he said gently.
‘I-I don’t know what I did. Where would he learn stuff like that?’ she whispered, trying not to cry.
Snape didn’t reply, but merely sat on his chair, pulled her onto his lap, and hugged her tight. She sobbed into his chest, as he stroked her hair, soothing her.
‘I’m scared daddy.’ she whispered.
‘I’m not surprised.’ he muttered.
She looked up at him.
‘I don’t want you going back to the common room tonight.’ he said. ‘Malfoy could be waiting anywhere, at any moment to get you back.’
He knew he was being overprotective, but he didn’t want her to get hurt again. He knew he couldn’t protect her from the world forever, but for now he could, and he would.
