But at least she knew most of this information, and as the professor went on to talk about Myrtle, Lily started to wonder if Myrtle was going to make an appearance any time soon. But now was another question... Lily raised her hand to answer the question, trying to find a way to simplify the answer. "The diary became a way for Tom Riddle's soul piece to control Ginny Weasley and re-open the chamber, allowing Tom to continue the work that he had been unable to do while he was at school." There... that was simple enough, right?
