"It is possible, and you're right in comparing pygmy puffs to birds. Males of both species tend to be brighter in color."
He hadn't noticed anything about fur textures, though.
"Good question," William tilted his head, "A baby puffskein is still bigger than a baby pygmy puff. So no, they're two different species now."
But, she was right about the squeaks. "Females do have a higher pitched squeak. Good."
William had to hold back a laugh at the mental imagery that came from putting a male pygmy puff in a cage full of female pygmy puffs during mating season. That was just...well........ and that was how pygmy puffs were created, kids. That was how.
He didn't say that though, no. Instead, Williamson listened thoughtfully to the boy's answer and noded slowly. "The males tend to make a sort of high-pitched humming sound above our human level of hearing during mating season, sort of as a call to females." He eyed the class to make sure they were writing this down. "But other than that, there really are no major differences in behavior that I have noticed between the two genders."
"Yes, excellent, as we've said, you can tell by their squeak whether a puff is male or female. There's actually a prototype for a pygmy puff squeak-o-meter out on the markets now, so look for that coming to your local pet shop. That should make it much easier to tell whether a puff is male or female."
As for the shades... hmm. "Males tend to be brighter overall, but there is no specific color that one gender favors over another. Males can be pink and females can be green, so you just really have to play it by ear," pun intended, "to figure out which gender your puff belongs to."
Hmm. Another good question!
"I've never actually thought of that, Ella," Will nodded, "but I suppose you could! I would assume that females, actually, have longer tongues, since they tend to be slightly larger than the males." Another fun fact for the class to jot down.
"Great idea!" Williamson grinned at the clever Slytherin. "We might be testing your theory of which activities pygmy puffs like best in just a few moments, but for now, I'll like to sum up what we've learned so far."
He flicked his wand at the empty wall space beside him so the notes came up nice and bright, replacing the ones from earlier. Pygmy Puff Genders - Males are brighter in color
- Males are fluffier
- Males make an extremely high humming sound to attract females
- Females have longer tongues
- Females have higher-pitched squeaks
- Both have different reproductive organs
"So," Williamson cleared his throat awkwardly, not exactly knowing how to phrase this next part, "If you can't determine your pygmy puff's gender by one of the first five distinctions, you can always try to locate its hidden ah.... reproductive organs, which are unique to each gender, and um, rather difficult to find...."
And he was not going to go into any more detail on that. Ahem. The professor picked up his own pygmy puff and perched him on his head, grateful for the distraction Nerf provided, and instead looked around the barn for another group and another topic.
"Let's talk about what pygmy puffs eat! I know a lot of you tried various creative methods of figuring this one out! Somebody, please share."
Ella smiled as Professor Williamson told her and the rest of the class that tongue size was actually another way to determine gender. She was happy that she hadn't given a far fetched answer.
As the new notes appeared on the board Ella started to copy them over to her notebook, wanting everything in case they would need it for homework. She tried not to giggle as the Professor talked about the puffs-er-lady and gentleman parts. She would much rather find out if they were males or females by one of the other ways listed on the wall. Besides, she couldn't imagine Barnabus would be happy if she went looking for his private parts!
Then the class was talking about food and Ella became hungry. Why oh why did that always happen at the mention of food? Her and Keefer hadn't discussed that topic either but she was curious about something. "Professor, I was wondering if there is anything that pygmy puffs shouldn't eat. I mean are they allergic to any foods? My dog can't eat chocolate because it makes her really sick." |
