11. Expecto Patronum

Regulus looked around uncertainly. Everyone’s eyes were closed or glazed, their faces arranged in blissful expressions. He felt a stone sink in his gut. He couldn’t think of anything that felt like that, and even when he could, memories just didn’t work like that for him. Remembering something didn’t flood him with the emotions of the past. He swallowed and looked down at his wand. He wasn’t going to be able to do this.

“Is everyone ready?” the Professor’s voice cut into his thoughts. A chorus of ‘Yes!’ contrasted with the desperate ‘No!’ that reverberated through Regulus’ mind.

Each student went up, some producing whisps that swirled out of the tips of their wands before disappearing like cigarette smoke in the daylight, other producing whole clouds that detached, and wavered brightly as they floated forward. Then, it was his turn.

He stepped forward, at a complete loss. “Expecto Patronum,” he recited. Nothing. He flushed for a moment, thinking as he almost did about how he was the weak brother and how Sirius would have laughed cruelly had he been there.

The memory came to him as if it had been called forward by someone else entirely. It had been bright in that strange summer way where the world seemed hazy and green as if the leaves bled from the rays that pierced them. He and Sirius had perched on a bench beneath a tree and Sirius was nursing a scrape on Regulus’ knee. Regulus’ sniffling had just ended when he asked. “We’ll always be brothers, right?”

Sirius had looked up and grinned. “Yep. And I’ll always protect you cause I’m your big brother. And because you’re a big baby.” Regulus had kicked his brother’s shin in retaliation, and they had wrestled in the grass.

“Expecto Patronum!” To his astonishment, a large, silver fox bounded out of his wand and circled the room at a run once before disappearing.

“Wonderful, Mr. Black. You’re the first one this year!”

Regulus nodded and looked down, scratching his forehead to hide tears.

Author's Note: I usually make sure to write exactly 200 words in each drabble. This is 338. I didn't think shortening this would have done it justice.
