Why was it so dark in there when it wasn't evening? She thought as she looked up and gazed around. She could see a few silhouetted shadows in the distance. But being at that dark alley seemed to ignite her fright nerves and that was why she jumped when someone talked not too far beside her.

Beezus can't see the face of the person, but she was sure it was a girl. She wasn't even sure if the greeting was aimed at her. Maybe I should just continue walking.
