Did the professor also want them to start collecting the ingredients? Probably not... right? They still had to set up their cauldrons and go through the five C's... again. Selena cleaned out her cauldron as the professor instructed with a scourgify before using Aguamenti to fill the cauldron with water. Quote:

First C of potion making, Cleanliness.
Wand in hand, Elise pointed it at the cauldron and circled it around the whole thing. "Scourgify," she muttered before peering in again. It looked clean, but she could never be too sure that Professor Lafay wouldn't turn the cauldron over. Performing the spell again, she repeated the process twice more until she was satisfied.
Okay. Now for water. "Aguamenti," she smiled, visualizing the cauldron brimming with water. A healthy stream erupted from her wand and just the right amount poured itself into the cauldron.
Not collecting ingredients yet, right? So Elise just listed the ingredients into her book. Quote:

Then it was time to fill it up. " Aguamenti," he said, filling the cauldron with water. He looked up when she mentioned the five C's. There was no way he had forgotten of the five C's. He wrote them on his notes, right above the ones he had previously written. Quote:

She made sure she was careful in her movement so as not to blast things. "Scourgify," she stated to clean it. She peered again and now was sure it is okay to start. She had been late, instead she decided to follow the new set of tasks and set about preparing her cauldron. Cleaning it out and filling it with water. "Scourgify," she pointed the cauldron glistened. "Aguamenti" and the water began to fill rapidly. There her cauldron was nice and ready for the next step. Quote:

Raising her hand she waited a few seconds before speaking, "Professor the five C's of Potions making are Color, concentration, care, cleanliness, and content." She smiled feeling proud of her obviously correct answer. Quote:

Alyssa took out her wand and pointing it inside her cauldron, she said the incantation, " Scourgify" to clean it. She then put down her wand and checked the insides of her cauldron to make sure it was properly cleaned.
Once Alyssa was sure that her cauldron was clean, she checked it for cracks. Her cauldron had to be free from cracks to prevent any possible leakage later. She definitely did not need that to happen in this class. Once she was sure that her cauldron was in perfect condition, Alyssa picked up her wand again and pointing it inside her cauldron, she said the incantation, " Aguamenti" to fill her cauldron with water. Water poured out from her wand and once there was sufficient water in the cauldron, she stopped the water from flowing by saying " Finite" to end the spell before holstering her wand and waited for further instructions. Then as instructed, Ira took her cauldron and first cleaned it, " Scourgify!" There, her cauldron was as clean it could be. And then filled it up with water. " Aguamenti" Water did not gush out from her wand but came as a slow stream. Fine, Ira was thankful that it at least came on first try. She filled the cauldron as required and then cast the finite spell to stop the flow. Then waited for further instructions. Quote:

She wasn't sure if the spell hadn't worked or if her cauldron was already clean enough... or perhaps they weren't supposed to see the difference anyway. Oh well. Of course this is Lafay's class and what Lafay likes is cleanliness and organized in every step of brewing. That's why there's the 5Cs. Jonathan placed his cauldron on the table and took out his wand as well. He pointed the wand onto his cauldron "Scourgify" cleaning it. Before putting the water in, Jonathan decided to copy the ingredients on the board. This could be very helpful in the future.
Okay, now time to fill up the cauldron with water. Again he pointed his wand inside the cauldron "Aguamenti" he uttered and saw water filling up the cauldron this time. Now to wait for Professor's further instructions. Quote:

And she still didn't trust her potionmaking skills enough to ask Matt later if he had any allergies. Just because she passed her OWL hadn't convinced her that she couldn't still fail.
As they were instructed to begin brewing, however, she shifted into motion. First step, making sure everything was clean. Her cauldron was already in front of her, so she leaned over to examine it closely before taking her wand out of its holster. "Scourgify," she cast, making sure to run her wand deliberately over every inch of the interior of her cauldron, as well as the outside just to be absolutely sure Professor Lafay wouldn't find anything wrong with her cauldron. She remembered last term, when several people's cauldrons had been overturned for not being clean, at least one of which fairly close to her own workstation, and she didn't want to inadvertently cause a repeat. And, once she was certain her cauldron was clean, she pointed her wand inside it once again. "Aguamenti," she cast then, letting the water that flowed from the tip of her wand slowly fill the cauldron, before ending the charm and turning to her notes. She didn't want to forget those. He looked up again wondering what the 5Cs were. Was that some kind of spell? He hesitated for a moment before proceeded to prepare his potions materials anyway, the way he always did it at Salem. He took out his cauldron and scourgified it to clean it, inspecting it for any cracks just to make sure it wouldnt leak. It was then that he cast the aguamenti spell and filled the cauldron with water. Quote:

Moving on..as the list of ingredients appeared on the board, she jotted them quickly on her parchment.
After doing so, Beezus walked over to where her cauldron was, scourgified it first since they were to follow the 5 C's and cleanliness was one and then took out her wand, pointed it towards the cauldron, "Aguamenti.." she uttered and a jet of water rushed into the cauldron from the tip of her wand. Estimating the level of water and settling for more than half of the cauldron, she pulled back her wand and waited for Professor Lafay to announce the steps. Quote:

Ella neatly began copying the ingredients down on her parchment, not wanting to miss anything. Then, putting her quill down, she took up her wand and pointed it at her cauldron. She knew that to fill it she would use aguamenti but the other students were using scourgify first...hmm. Taking a note from the older students, Ella pointed her wand at her cauldron and said, "Scourgify." She wasn't really sure what was supposed to be different so she shrugged and began filling the cauldron with water. "Aguamenti." When she thought there was an adequate amount, she pulled her wand back and looked up at the Professor. Quote:

As she was getting her cauldron ready and pulling her wand out she thought about the 5 C's and about last years class when students didn't use the C's. Ok the C's are Color, Concentration, Care, Cleanliness, and Content she thought to her self. Then looking at the cauldron she pointed her wand "Scourgify" Once Minerva knew the cauldron was clean she pointed again "Aguamenti" the water began to fill in the cauldron. Minerva noticed she had enough water so she pointed "Finite" and placed her wand back into it's proper place. Quote:

Silvia was very familiar with the cleaning spell; she witnessed her mother use it numerous times. Then cleaning must be one of the five Cs. It definitely made sense.
She pointed her wand at the cauldron and said "Scourgify." It was hard to tell if it had made any difference; but then, this was her first ever potion so the cauldron couldn't be that dirty to begin with. Plus she had wiped out all the dust that had been collecting in it last night. The Five C's. Right. Those were pretty much drilled into her mind by this point. Cleanliness was what she needed now, though, so she peered into her cauldron. Although she didn't immediately see anything out of the ordinary, she very well knew that dust and left behind ingredients had a tricky way of hiding out until something went wrong.
She pointed her wand deep into the cauldron. "Scourgify!" she said. She waited a minute for the spell to take effect then pointed her wand into the cauldron one again. "Aguamenti!" she said, and filled the cauldron with water. When the water reached the point it should be, she ended the water charm with a quick "Finite," then waited for the next set of instructions. Quote:

The theoretical part of the class was soon over, and they were starting the potion now. By filling their cauldrons with water, simple as that. So far so good. 'Aguamenti.' Ariadne spoke firmly, pointing her wand to the inside of her cauldron and watching it fill with water, until she gauged it had reached the right level, when she stopped the charm.
