Because not everyone has an allergy, right?

She had learned a lot about allergens and the different types of reactions someone can have when she saw a friend collapse and almost die when she unknowingly ate a peanut. So, Zhenya asked her father to explain it to her. She really felt bad for some of the other students.

"It's what happens when something in a person's immune system messes up and thinks something that's not really dangerous, like pollen, is dangerous," she said, hoping that made at least some sense (it had when she was thinking it).

Closing her textbook, she smiled and raised her hand. She knew this one by heart. "An allergy is when your immune system is hypersensitive. An allergic reaction is actually just the immune system acting up to something that to others is just harmless."

"Most allergic reactions are mild, such as sneezing or itchiness, but some are severe and can cause life-threatening situations."

Lowering her hand, she looked around. She and Beezus weren't the only ones. There were about four of them? But those were chocolate, not necessarily cacao. A true cacao allergy was rare, at least that was what she was told...

Kacie raised her hand so she could answer the question. Telling want an allergy is was easy enough. "It an illness that causes people to have a bad reaction to things that's usually harmless like food or other things," she said, giving a simple answer of what she thought an allergy was. "I hope I never develop an allergy or if I do I hope its not something I'd hate to give up."

Guess he was gonna have to wing it "Professor, an allergy is the body's defensive response to a substance it doesnt agree with. Usually those substances are harmless and can be found anywhere in the environment but depending on a person's specific physiology, those substances can upset the body's internal balance. Thats why the body's defensive mechanism kicks in and starts producing other substances to counteract it, and thats when we notice the physical symptoms of an allergy-- such as sneezing, swelling or itchiness."

Okay, she tried to answer the question and raised her hand

"An An allergy is a hypersensitivity disorder of the immune system. Allergic reactions occur when a person's immune system reacts to normally harmless substances in the environment. A substance that causes a reaction is called an allergen." Then..

"Hatchi!"

ALLERGIES. It's official they'll be learning something that is linking to allergies today. No doubt about it. A potion that probably gets rid of the allergies, or something like that... maybe.

Jonathan raised his hand to answer "Allergies are reactions of the body to a normally harmless substance such as food, weather, animals, fruits, and many more that some students have mentioned earlier."

Even if that something was eating corn. Now he didn't even like corn so it didn't matter anymore. His allergy was more lethal anyways--Sierra could easily throw flowers in his face if she wanted to annoy him. Throwing corn in Sierra's face would not only make him look stupid but it wouldn't produce the same affect.

Lost in his thoughts, he shook his head and then raised his hand to get back into the class. "Allergic reactions are your body's natural reaction to something that makes it sick. When you come into contact with something you're allergic to, your body goes into defense mode, which is why you have a runny nose, a cough, and stuff like that. Your body is trying to get rid of the thing that's irritating it, like it's a germ," he said. He felt bad for the people with food allergies, they got the worst of it with the blocked wind pipe and all that nasty stuff.

Sierra happened to glance to the side of her and catch Alex's smirk. Alex never smirked. A smirk to a Hufflepuff was like...a dog meow'ing or a kitten barking. It just made little to no sense. Nevertheless, she knew why he was smirking. She could feel it in her bones--he was smirking at her corn allergy. If she thought she could get away with it, she'd toss her opened bottle of ink at him.

So...what was an allergy? With her hand raised, Sierra said, "Sometimes, our bodies mistake normal, everyday things for intruders in our body. Things like flowers, nuts, or...corn should be harmless to us, but if our body overreacts and thinks it's something we shouldn't be in contact with, we get an allergy." She lowered her hand. "Then we end up with things like rashes or runny noses."

So what were allergies eh? Raising his hand he then spoke up. "Professor Lafay, an allergy is something, depending on the specifics, that the body sort of 'rejects' with its sinuses or other glands. You've already presented us with many different types." There was no use in giving an example.

She nodded. "Good. Good. Yes. An allergy is an abnormal reaction to a substance that you come in contact with. So... the way you fight it, is you force your body to NOT recognize the substance. And to do that... you need a potion." She smirked.

"Now... who can think of what ingredients might come in this potion?" She asked and waited to hear the answers.
