He watched her for a moment, soaking in the information, but before he could really speak, he found her finger placed on his forehead. His light brown eyes glanced up to his own forehead before returning to Aspen's own gaze, and in the next moment his expression had broken into a warm smile. "You can hear that I'm thinking?" he repeated with amusement in his expression. That seemed to be what she was saying. She couldn't necessarily hear his thoughts, she sounded like she was just saying that she could hear...that he was thinking.
Cornelius thought for a moment, scanning over her expression as she removed her finger from his forehead, returning her hands to her lap as though sheepish of her own actions. She seemed honestly curious to know what he was thinking about, but at the same time managed to seem as though she wasn't pressuring him to speak. In the moment, he felt like he could talk to her if he chose, or remain quiet, and she wouldn't push him one way or the other. It was a surprisingly nice choice to have.
Gently, he took one of her hands in both of his own and pulled just slightly at her finger, so she was pointing as she had been just moments before. An amused smile still playing on his lips, he touched her fingertip back to his forehead as she had done before, and returned his gaze to her own. As though her finger being on his head was the only way she could truly hear what he was thinking, Cornelius spoke just a second later, his hand still holding hers up. "You confuse me, Aspen Odessa," he admitted softly, his gaze stuck to her own. It was obvious that his words weren't meant in a bad way, as a soft smile still played on his mouth, but he was being completely honest with her. He had no idea how to proceed with Aspen, she threw any smooth instincts he may have had straight out the window with her bat snacks the day he met her.
It didn't make sense to grin at what Cornelius was saying to her, but how could she not? He was embracing her theory that she could "hear" him think, and now using her finger as if a LINK to interpret his thoughts. Clearly he didn't mind her fingers on his forehead. "I don't mean to," Aspen sort of apologized. "I'd offer to explain or help de-confuse you, but I'll probably just make it worse."
But there WAS one thing she could do. With Aspen's free hand, she reached for one of his at her own her forehead. She gently stole one, latched onto his forefinger, and brought it to HER forehead. "Try me?" she suggested. "Better? Less confused? Do I make more sense suddenly?"
