How are we going to protect ourselves?" She didn't expect Nate to know the answer to those questions, but she had to voice them or she'd go crazy. And since she was letting it all out ... "I got a letter," she mumbled, pulling away from the hug and fumbling in her pocket. "A few days ago." She unfolded the paper, which looked worn like it had been read many times before, and showed it to Nate and Jordan.
Jez bit her lip, looking down. "I tried to tell him you guys don't know anything," she said quietly. "He doesn't believe me." Jared didn't believe the lie, because she had told her friends everything. Stupid girl. She shouldn't have dragged everyone into it. She told herself that every day, every time she thought about it, but she still couldn't change it. And now Jordan was involved ... "I don't know what to do," she admitted, finally answering Jordan's question. She ran her hands through her long hair, which was starting to tangle again without Sam's constant badgering to look after it. "I don't know, I don't know, I don't know!" And it was not knowing that was killing her inside.
Nate clamped his arms back around Jez, even if only to keep her from tearing her hair out. "Scalping yourself won't help," he said, "I don't know what to do either. We still have Keegan and Des, and now we've got Lex and Kieran, too." Hopefully this was helpful.
Nate took the pictures from Jordan and stuffed them in his pocket. No way he was about to look at those again. "Thanks," he muttered. This situation sucked. It thoroughly sucked. Releasing Jez, he took a step back. "One thing that's for sure is that we need to stick together. If we're going to die, I don't want to go down without a fight."
