Don't Cross the Book | who turned out the | Lights Lennox
Jez woke up screaming. Actually she'd taken to sleeping in a ball under her blankets, a habit picked up from sleeping in abandoned shops with only a jacket for warmth, so her screams were muffled. She threw the blankets off her head, staring around wildly, shivering. The dorm was quiet, as everyone was asleep. Moonlight spilled in through an open window near her. Jez slipped out of bed and tip-toed over to the window, sitting down on the wide stone ledge and opening the window a bit. The cold wind seemed to calm her down a little, and she made herself comfortable on the ledge, staring down into the dark grounds. Jez wasn't afraid of the dark - there were too many other things in this world to be frightened of without adding silly little details like lack of light. Things like Jared and Team Wolf.
Jez shuddered, hugging her knees to her chest. Her nightmares were so vivid, so realistic, that she had to glance over at Pam's bed to make sure her friend was alive, not being tortured and eventually killed by Jared. She would have liked to check on Nate too, just in case, but she had a feeling the teachers wouldn't accept a dream as an excuse for being in the boys' dorm. He was never tortured in her nightmares - she supposed she should be somewhat glad she didn't have to see him screaming in agony like when she saw Pam - but seeing his body, the blood spreading over his shirt and dripping onto the floor, his blank glassy eyes ... that was enough. You didn't need audio with those terrifying visuals. Then her own death - a quick Killing Curse, sent straight at her. Jez always hated that her dream self had a quick and painless end compared to her friends'.
She had a feeling the nightmare had been planted in her mind by Jared - that somehow, he was using long-distance Legilimency against her. It would explain how Team Wolf had known where the safe house was, and where to find them in Diagon Alley ... what if they knew about Lex and Kieran? What if Jared was 'reading' her mind right now, as she was thinking of them?
Jez leant her head against the window. She couldn't be totally sure her own mind was safe anymore. And if you can't trust yourself, who can you trust?
