Emily could barely sleep at all that night. Back home, she always had to sleep with Draco for her to actually have a night of sleep. But here, where she was completely alone except for her owl, there would be no way she could sleep. At one point, she just gave up on sleeping and grabbed a book from her trunk.
She really hadn’t thought this running away thing through. She hadn’t gotten dinner, because she didn’t go to school, and her stomach was already groaning in protest. She decided that in the morning, she’d use a few charms and change her appearance and then go into the village to buy food and juice to feed her hunger.
Bluejeans hooted his annoyance of her lightened wand tip, so she put it out, sighing. She wished they could all go back to a few years earlier when things were so much simpler. But that wasn’t possible. Voldemort was growing stronger by the minute. Her best friend turned her back on her and she just dumped one of the only men she’s ever loved. She had run away and she felt completely and utterly alone. Emily started crying again as she tried to push them all out of her mind. She couldn’t think about them, wouldn’t think about them, anymore. They were a void in her life and it seems that they would be staying that way.
*** “Has she contacted you?” he asked in exasperation as Tonks came through the door. He had sent a Patronus to her, Kingsley, Dumbledore, the Weasleys, and Sophie and Sean to keep a look out for Emily. Remus was in panic mode at the moment as Tonks shook her head. She grabbed his arm and led him to the couch in the living room.
“I’m sure she’s fine, Remus… We just need to stay calm,” Tonks said quietly.
“Stay calm? How am I supposed to stay calm, Dora? What the bloody hell was she thinking, running away like that? Does she have any idea how many people want her dead right now?” he shouted and Tonks flinched.
“Yes, and I’m sure she’s put up protection charms… She’s a smart witch, Remus, I’m positive she’s safe.” “Then why hasn’t she replied to my Patronus? What if something happened to her? What if Bellatrix has found her and is torturing her right now?” he shouted as he paced the length of the room.
“Damn it, Sirius! This is your fault! If you hadn’t gone to that bloody fight and died, none of this would have happened!” he shouted as he started pounding the walls with his fist. Some of the picture frames rattled while others clattered to the floor, the glass breaking into millions of pieces. Tonks crossed the room to Remus, grabbing his arms and pulling him to face her.
“We’ll find her, Remus, I promise you that,” she whispered as a tear leaked out of her eye. He dropped his head to her shoulder as he hugged her tightly.
“Thanks, Dora,” he whispered.
“Would you come with me so I can check on a few places she might be? Or do you have to get back to the school?” “I’m sure they can manage without me for a bit. Where to first?” Tonks asked as she grabbed her wand from her pocket and made her way to the door, him tailing her.
*** “Okay, Blue, I’m relieving you of keeping me company,” Emily told her owl as she grabbed her money pouch and cloak.
“I’m off to get some food; don’t worry, I’ll pick you up some treats too. You can have the day off, but would you mind coming back for the night?” she whispered as she pet him. He hooted twice and then flew off, no doubt to see Hedwig and America.
Emily placed herself in front of the dirty, old mirror and started morphing her appearance to something completely unnoticeable. After that, she grabbed her broom and flew off toward the village. She made sure to buy some chips and then a Butterbeer or two. She figured she could always go back later when she was in the mood to buy supplies. After she bought some special treats for Bluejeans, she made her way into the Three Broomsticks. She had a while until nightfall, and since she was disguised, she didn’t see how it could do much harm.
And then she saw the couple seated at the bar. Sophie and Sean. She panicked slightly before remembering that she didn’t look like Emily Black anymore, so she had nothing to worry about. Donning a French accent, she ordered a bottle of Firewhiskey and waited.
They glanced at her curiously before turning back to Rosmerta.
“Well, if you see her, will you let us, Dumbledore, or Remus know?” Sophie asked sadly.
“Yes, of course… I’ll keep an eye out,” she said as she handed Emily her Firewhiskey. Emily paid her and hurried through the door. She quickly made her way back to the Shrieking Shack, shrinking to the bed. A minute later, Bluejeans flew through the room.
“Hey, buddy, I thought you were staying with Hedwig and America until tonight?” Emily asked brightly. He hooted once and held up his leg, which she noticed had a letter attached.
Emily,
Please don’t do this. Don’t run away, don’t give up. Just come back and we’ll work all this out. I need you and whether you admit it or not, I know you need me, too.
You can’t actually believe all those things you said? I don’t miss that life one bit, Emily. The prejudice, the bloodline, the status, the Dark Arts… It was all crap. I could never hate you for taking me out of that place. I love you for it. And you know I never liked Pansy, nor do I love my father. I don’t know… I’ve kind of seen Remus as my father figure for some time now… He actually cares about me, or at least, I think he does.
Look, we’re all in danger. And not just the regular dangers, the Death Eaters have actual targets on us, Ems. They’re “waiting” for us, whatever that means. So, just be careful and come back. I’m going crazy here, Ems, I need you to come back. For me, for you, for us. I’m not ready to lose you; I’ll never be ready to lose you.
Forever & Always,
Draco
P.S. Why did you send Bluejeans on without you?
Emily had tears falling onto the parchment by the time she had finished reading it, but she still wasn’t going to go back. She ran for a reason. Emily folded the letter carefully, placing it on top of the bed sheets as she gave Bluejeans his treats from her bag and then grabbed another book to read. This wasn’t how she had imagined her life, but it’s what she’s got. She wondered how long she could keep this going before they found her or she just ended it herself. She wasn’t so sure she could withstand the pain for much longer before she finally snapped.
