When Dallin stumbled towards her, Ellie didn't make an attempt to stop him or help him or anything. She kept her fisted hands in her pockets. But Dallin's hands were on her shoulders. She wished he wouldn't touch it. It would have been so much easier if he would have kept his distance. But it still would have been hard. Even if he were miles away, it would still be hard.

His voice cracked and Ellie looked at the ground. She couldn't even try and stop the tears anymore. Ellie alternated between pressing her lips together and biting them. Why was he making this so hard for her? Ellie had to do this! It was for the best.

Ellie looked up through watery eyes to see Dallin looking down at her. She felt her heart drop to her stomach when he said, 'Don't leave me Ellie.' She took in another deep, shaky breath and grabbed his hands on her shoulders. "I have to." Slipping the necklace into one of his hands, Ellie quickly lowered his arms to his sides and stood on her tip-toes.

A kiss placed on the corner of his mouth. And Ellie was gone. Running away.

He could tell it was coming. As soon as Ellie grabbed his hands, Dallin knew what she was going to do. Leave him. And he had to stop her. But there was no time. In a split second she had kissed him, and ran off. His brain didn't have time to function.

He was alone.

After almost two years of being together, after Ellie and Dallin had both almost lost their lives, after summers and Christmases and kisses and everything, they were really done.

Dallin felt the ground underneath him; he had lowered himself to a sitting position on the ground. A coughing sob came up his throat as he put his head in his hands... and felt something in his palm that he hadn't realized was there before. With a shaky breath he opened his eyes; it was the necklace. Ellie's necklace that Dallin had given her for Christmas. The one with the wave and the circle. Ellie had given it back.

He wanted to run after her. He wanted to find her, tell her that he loved her, and that he couldn't let her do this. But his legs didn't want to move. So he just sat, holding the necklace tightly in his fist, leaning against his legs, staring blankly at the ground in front of him.

They were done. Because Ellie didn't want to hurt him anymore. She didn't want him anymore.
