I can't do this anymore.

Just like a few days ago, Dallin felt what seemed like a physical blow to his chest. And it was bad enough to bring the sting of tears to the back of his eyes. He squeezed them shut, his hands balling into fists for a moment before he opened them again when Ellie finished talking.

I can't do this anymore.

The words echoed in Dallin's mind, clouding it up. He couldn't think anything except "No, no, no..." And it took him another moment to realized he had said the words out loud.

"Ellie," he stepped forward, stumbling a little, and tried to take her hands. They were in her pockets though, so he gave up on that and put his hands on her shoulders instead. "Ellie," His voice cracked, and he shut his eyes again.

"I can't let you go again." He wouldn't do it. He wouldn't. All that he had gone through to keep her here with him... he wouldn't throw that away. Even if that was selfish, he didn't care. "Ellie." He shook his head, looking in her blue eyes. Her blue-before-the-white-of-waves blue eyes. "Don't leave me Ellie." Please.

Ellie felt a pain in her chest and wondered if it was possible to feel her heart breaking. No, no, no... She clenched her jaw and tried her hardest to block him out, but she couldn't do it. It was too hard. She loved him, she really did. She just couldn't do it anymore.

When Dallin stumbled towards her, Ellie didn't make an attempt to stop him or help him or anything. She kept her fisted hands in her pockets. But Dallin's hands were on her shoulders. She wished he wouldn't touch it. It would have been so much easier if he would have kept his distance. But it still would have been hard. Even if he were miles away, it would still be hard.

His voice cracked and Ellie looked at the ground. She couldn't even try and stop the tears anymore. Ellie alternated between pressing her lips together and biting them. Why was he making this so hard for her? Ellie had to do this! It was for the best.

Ellie looked up through watery eyes to see Dallin looking down at her. She felt her heart drop to her stomach when he said, 'Don't leave me Ellie.' She took in another deep, shaky breath and grabbed his hands on her shoulders. "I have to." Slipping the necklace into one of his hands, Ellie quickly lowered his arms to his sides and stood on her tip-toes.

A kiss placed on the corner of his mouth. And Ellie was gone. Running away.
