9. Disapparate

Regulus remembers that the first time he met Severus Snape, he had still been under his brother’s wing. He knew later that that was most likely the reason Severus had given him a glare so painfully and frighteningly hateful that Regulus had wished he could have disapparated right there.

It was September 1st, 1972, the beginning of his first year. Then, he had still clung to Sirius, and Sirius had still allowed him to (Regulus thought bitterly years later that this had only been out of hope that Regulus would somehow be a Gryffindor). Regulus returned Mother’s good-bye with some anxiety before rushing off to follow his brother to the train where they would sit with Potter, Lupin, and Pettigrew (he would be on first-name basis with them for only a few hours).

When they arrived at their customary carriage, there was already another boy, pale with black hair and eyes tired enough to look almost bruised. There were curses, both lingual and magical, exchanged, and then Severus looked Regulus in the eye with so much loathing that it took Regulus nearly six months to speak to the boy. Later, Severus would be almost as dear to him as Sirius.
