Kendra stood with the many other first years on the cool stone floor of the great hall. The place awed her, from the great windows to the candles floating in the magical night sky that lay in the rafters.
Many different emotions ran through the crowd around her, she could sense it. It was like a time bomb ready to go off. Some were nervous, afraid of what house they may be sorted into, others were cocky. Boasting about how their family had always been in Gryffindor, and that it was obvious that they would be joining the red and gold table soon. Kendra was one of the nervous ones. The people she would meet would be her friends for the rest of her time here. But most of all, they were like her, and she was now in a place where she belonged.
She watched as yet another student went up towards the sorting hat, her name was next in the list. The worn hat pondered on a name, frowning slightly before settling. ‘Hufflepuff!’ It yelled, it’s voice booming over the endless lengths of table that lay across the great hall. A cheer erupted from the Hufflepuff table, welcoming the newcomer.
‘Holmes, Kendra.’
Kendra’s gray eyes darted up towards the stall, placed at the front of the hall. She walked forwards slowly, pulling on the edges of her sleeves in nervousness. She sat down and the hat was lowered onto her head, she could only see a rim of light from under it. The hat pondered for a moment before yelling.
‘RAVENCLAW!’
For no reason at all, Kendra sighed with relief, before taking the hat off and returning it to the professor, before heading towards the Blue table. Her new home.
