It wouldn't be hard to say he was a little unsettled when the girl nonchalantly reached into his hair and pulled out some gum.
I think that's a wad of gum he joked, still upset that a piece of gum found it's way into his hair. He hadn't had any gum on him and a certainly doesn't remember chewing it.

Her mind drifted off to her first time she had been on this train. She remembered sitting in a compartment with Tyler, Oakey and Zara.
