"Of course you can!" he immediately called, jumping to his feet as he listened to her introduce herself and mention that the two boys looked new.
Cor gave an enthusiastic nod, grabbing her hand gently and beginning to shake it similarly to how he shook Edric's. "Cornelius Rune, pleasure to have your aquaintance," he announced as he shook her hand, dropping the handshake a moment later with a grin. "And yes, I'm new."
It was only as the boy sitting somewhere behind him spoke, explaining that he was a new student starting his fifth year, that Cornelius began a slow motion turn towards the unknown boy, his eyes widening all the while as though a great mystery had just been uncovered and he was the head detective.
"YOU ARE KIDDING ME!" Cornelius nearly yelled in his excitement, quickly abandoning his place next to Emma and practically running the two feet over to the other male student in the compartment. His face set in pure enthusiasm, the boy plopped down in the seat next to this still un-named student, turning towards him. "Dude."
"Way to try to keep a secret!" he accused, shoving his arm gently as he revelled in this new information. Realizing the other new student might not understand, he sat up a bit straighter to explain, "I'm new, and I'm starting my fifth year too!" He let his mouth fall open as though expressing Edric's own surprise for him.

He wasn't that outgoing was he? "Fifth year, that's a great year..." she began and then paused.
Emma was about to open her mouth when Cornelius came over and introduced himself. WOAH. His excitement and enthusiasm nearly knocked her off her feet. A smile instantly appeared on her face. A genuine smile. And then he was already shaking her hand. Nice and polite! Bonus points there. Emma could already tell that Cornelius probably would have a trail of first years following him. "Wonderful to meet you to Cornelius," she chuckled and then the boy zipped back over to no-named boy's side. Merlin. Both fifth years? She'd already met a lot of fifth years already. They were making her feel ancient. Or maybe that was because her boyfriend and a lot of her friends had graduated? Nevertheless, she was only one year older than both of them and could not understand how they made her feel so very old. Turning to Edric, she held her hand out towards him so he could shake it, "And nice to meet you too. Even though I don't know your name," she said, cheerfully. These two made an interesting pair.
"Well. Welcome to Hogwarts! Or at least- the Hogwarts Express. If you need any help or have any questions, I'd love to help you out there. So do you guys know what house your in already or want to be sorted in?" she asked, curiously. For some kids didn't know what house they were in and others had already been sorted.
Edric stared out the window with disinterest as Cornelius and Emma exchanged words. May Merlin have mercy on his soul, this was going to be a loooooooooooooooooong ride. The Gryffindor wasn't sure he would make it out of that compartment alive, not with Cornelius throwing him around like a rag doll and this Emma girl's high-pitched voice buzzing in his eardrums.
And then Cornelius began to freak out.
Involuntarily, Edric jumped in his seat and turned to the door wide-eyed, assuming for a moment there that the train had just been broken into by serial killers or something - but nah, it was just Cornelius being Cornelius. Y'know, giving Edric heart attacks. The usual.
As the boy went on about secrets and stuff, Edric merely raised an eyebrow at him. And then Cornelius went on to explain his excitement - he was new too, and was also starting his fifth year.
Edric stared at him blankly for a good ten seconds before his face suddenly transformed, his dark eyebrows rising and his lips widening to the largest - but not brightest - of smiles. "Really?" he began. "You don't say? What a coincidence! Who would have thought!" he continued, tones dripping sarcasm as he mocked the other boy's excitement. "Golly gee, let's see what other great wonderful things we've got in common!" He grinned, mouth open wide in the largest of smiles, before ending the act abruptly and putting a serious face back on.
Seriously.
It was NOT that big of a deal, this kid was being ridiculous.
Thoughhhhhhhh, it might be true that Edric felt a
LITTLE, TINY, MICROSCOPIC bit better knowing that he wasn't alone in starting a new year at a new school full of strangers.
Of course, though, he'd never admit to that. Cornelius must NEVER find out he was a source of comfort to Edric Barlow for 15 whole seconds.
And then the Emma character was offering Edric her hand and inquiring about his name. Edric merely stared at her for a moment before, much against his will, he shook the girl's hand. "I'm Edric," he said simply. Then he just waited for them to go ahead and get it wrong. About 98% of the people he'd met in his 15 years of life ALWAYS got it wrong and called him 'Eric'.
Edric listened as Emma then pretty much assigned herself the job of tour guide before going on to ask what Houses they were in. "Oh, I do," started Edric, "Cornie here, though, wants to know if the houses come furnished," he explained.
Of course, though, Edric was already familiar with the House system and Hogwarts and all that jazz, but he wasn't going to waste his time trying to explain it to the other boy, so he figured he might hand that chore over to blondie over there, who looked ever so eager to help.
