26. Morsmordre

Time moved slowly as they lined up in front of him to stare into blood-red eyes. Regulus felt a intruding presence in his mind and repressed both a shudder and years of family-taught Occlumency. He had nothing to hide. Still, he held his breath.

“Kneel.”

Regulus did so, head bowed.

“Your arm.”

He paused, wondering if he was meant to give his left or right. The others had offered their left, but Regulus was left-handed. Surely it would be easily noticed on his wand arm. He panicked at the realization that his hesitation had gone on too long, and shoved his left arm out quickly, choosing to mimic and praying that there was no offense.

“You are left-handed are you not?”

Regulus nodded, for once relieved that his thoughts had not been hidden. “Yes, my lord.”

“Then you will give me your right arm.” The Dark Lord’s wand dug into his skin. “Morsmordre.” The new incantation was followed by a protean charm. Regulus held back the scream of pain as ink streamed into his skin. The ink was thick and hot and felt more like something alive, like a worm. As he backed away and looked down, the snake squirmed.
