“Waddiwasi”
The whisper came from behind him, and Regulus tightened his hand around his quill even before he felt the ball of paper, no doubt wet with spit, against the back of his head.
“Oh honestly, Sirius.”
The second voice would be Lupin, Regulus knew, kind enough to whisper reproach over the snickering, but too much of a coward to shout it and not cunning enough to be a quiet threat. The shy fourth-year Gryffindor was always quite useless.
It was up to Regulus.
Forgoing subtlety, Regulus twisted in his chair and sent the spitball back in Sirius’ direction. The look on his brother’s face at his daring as the spitball bounced off of his forehead, and the success of pulling it off while the professor’s back was turned but the rest of the class watched made Regulus grin as he turned back to his notes. With a faint hope for victory, he threw a glance at Severus, but the other boy looked murderous, his knuckles and lips white. “Waddiwasi”—a spitball hit Severus then, and Regulus as well. Regulus’ face fell, suddenly regretting that he’d been promoted from third year Arithmancy.
It was going to be a long year. |
