“Mummy? Can I get an owl?”
Darwin looked at his mother marking essays across the table, while Emiline smirked at her phone next to him.
“And why would you want an owl, Darwin?” Her voice was tired and she raised an eyebrow.
“Because they’re cool. Brooke has one.”
“I’m pretty sure the Radleys don’t have an owl; it’s illegal to keep them as pets.”
The nine year old was confused – he’d seen the owl, it was definitely there, and Brooke’s mummy wouldn’t break the law, would she? “But- but- I-”
“That is enough nonsense, Darwin. Finish your maths homework, please.”
