A new behind-the-scenes feature on Aberforth Dumbledore in
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 was released, where Daniel Radcliffe, David Yates, and Ciaran Hinds, who portrayed the younger Dumbledore brother in the finale, discussed the how much makeup it took to create the character, as well as the impact Aberforth had on Harry before his final turn to Hogwarts.
David Yates: Harry's had so many challenges in his journey, his odyssey, of beating Voldemort, and the biggest is this moment with Aberforth.
Daniel Radcliffe: In a way, Aberforth is almost like the last test It's like he's given me another chance to turn back and to pack it all in, actually: 'We're never going to win this.' And it's the moment when Harry decides to go, 'If I don't carry on with this, what am I going to do?'
Ciaran Hinds: It was quite interesting because in a way you're working on a blank canvas. This is the kind of guy that lives underground, he's very basic, he's of the earth. But once you're informed about the childhood memory of what happened with his brother, you play it through a memory and an emotion, and you hope that all this will end.
Daniel: The makeup, I think, on Ciaran, is the best makeup that's ever been done on any of the films. It's astonishing. To make him look that much like Michael Gambon while still there being just enough subtle differences for it to be a brother rather than an identical twin.
Ciaran: It was really hard to find yourself in there. It's a fairly heavy disguise. It comes in three parts; what they've done is made me some little eye bags just in here, but then they push into the skin. And then they've given me - what you can't see - from the eyes up here is this big forehead that Michael has that I don't. And the only other thing is the nose because mine's a bit crooked and thinner. So in fact they just added some features and then it transforms the whole thing.
Daniel: The eyes are what do it. You don't think about it, he's got very distinctive under his eyes, that's very specific to Michael. That's what really sold it to me. Ciaran just wore it beautifully. It effected his speech, it effected his movement. You just see someone looking very natural.
