Violet had been standing patiently in line (yes, another line!) for what seemed like a long time. At first she had been too busy thinking about how beautiful the castle had looked when she got her first glimpse of it during the boat ride across the lake, towers rising everywhere and the windows all lit up--she would never forget her first view of Hogwarts as long as she lived. She had scribbled furiously in her journal all the way across, writing down her first impressions before she forgot them.
But now she was getting tired of standing here, with all the older students staring at the first years. She had seen Sage, Temperance, and Chelsea, three of the girls she had met on the train, already sorted into their Houses--they all seemed pretty happy with what they got. Violet hoped she would wind up in a place where she would have friends.
Finally she heard the words, "Blackthorne, Violet P.," and walked up to the stool with the whole school's eyes upon her. She sat down and felt the Sorting Hat placed on her head. "Hmmm....a great love of learning here, no doubt you would do well in Ravenclaw...you definitely have nerve in certain situations, and you're not afraid of hard work when it's for something you really want....but overwhelming everything else is a burning desire to prove yourself, to achieve greatness, so I guess it had better be ... yes, SLYTHERIN!!!"
Violet blinked her eyes as the Hat was taken off her head and thought to herself, 'Ha!! that'll show my uncles I'm as good as the rest of the family!'
Then she rose and walked over to the Slytherin table to sit with the rest of her new House.
