Ashley had no idea what he was supposed to do with his wand. But he'd been waiting since he'd gotten it to be able to strap it on in its holster. It just seemed cool, even though he still wasn't allowed to use it. He'd never had a moment in his life where he didn't feel like a wizard, but having it actually on his person just solidified the whole idea. Also, it was cool. He watched the girl as she tried to figure out what to do with hers, not bothering to give her any advice. She should know, right? She certainly didn't seem like a first year.
And that was confirmed a moment later, so it was probably best that he hadn't said anything.

Instead he just nodded, a hint of a smile on his face. "I'm Ash. First year," he replied, eyebrows raised slightly. "Where did you go before now?" It was a valid question, wasn't it? Not too personal? Not that he was a great judge of what was personal or not. Even if it was too personal, he probably would have asked anyway.
