"Lied?" he repeated, sitting up straight and working hard to control his voice and keep it level. "I didn't lie, Louisa." He had no idea why he was suddenly so angry. Maybe just the fact that she was accusing him of something that he didn't do. Plus, he hated lying. He would never do it himself.

"When you asked me," he said slowly. His voice shook with his effort to keep it calm. "I didn't have a girlfriend. I was being one hundred percent honest with you." Just so you know. "For your information, I didn't have a girlfriend until the night before the feast. So if you would have talked to me last night, you would know that I didn't lie to you." Why was he telling her all this? He didn't know. She just had to understand, though.
